Another proud moment for Meerut,the reason for which we celebrates our National Sports Day today on 29 august this day marks the birthday of Major Dhyan Chand ji,he lived in Meerut from 1947-1956 he was retired from the Army from Meerut itself. Major Dhyan Chand led India to the top of the Olympic podium thrice and scored over 400 goals. He is Known as the ‘Wizard of Hockey’, Dhyan Chand displayed such mastery and control over the ball that more than once, authorities across the world broke his hockey stick to check if there was a magnet inside. Dhyan Chand, was an Indian hockey player, who brought India laurels with his hockey stick. He is the man who made Adolf Hitler leave the stadium mid-way during a match in the 1936 Olympics final against Germany, which India went on to win 8-1, with Dhyan Chand scoring six of those goals. Major Dhyan Chand was one of the greatest hockey players in the history of the sport.He was known for his extraordinary goal-scoring feats, in addition to earning three Olympic gold medals, in 1928, 1932 and 1936, during an era where India dominated field hockey. His influence extended beyond these victories, as India won the field hockey event in seven out of eight Olympics from 1928 to 1964.
