Cutlery Toy Shop was established in 1947 by Shri Diwan Chand Ji, in the very year India became independent. Initially, it was a modest cutlery store dealing in household items. But in 1951, he introduced toys to the shelves—an idea that would forever change the childhood memories of countless families in Meerut. At a time when there was no dedicated toy shop in the old city, this became a magical destination for children. Handmade wooden toys, tin toys, spinning tops, dolls, miniature kitchen sets and toy trains filled the shop with wonder. For many children, visiting this store was the most exciting part of a trip to Valley Bazaar. Today, the legacy is carried forward by Shri Pramod Kumar Ji, who recalls the golden age when traditional handmade toys dominated the market. With the arrival of inexpensive imported toys, especially from China, and the expansion of Meerut into newer commercial areas, the character of the market gradually changed. Younger generations chose different professions, and the business no longer expanded as it once did. Yet the soul of the shop remains untouched. For me, this story is deeply personal. As a child, I too stood before these shelves with the same excitement, choosing toys that became treasured companions of my early years. Decades later, life has come full circle. Today, I return to the very same shop to buy toys for my granddaughter. The toys may have changed, and the city around it may have transformed, but the joy in a child’s eyes remains exactly the same.
