In the quiet landscapes of Mandu, far from the grand palaces and royal pavilions, stands a modest yet deeply meaningful structure — Dai ka Mahal. Unlike the celebrated monuments of Mandu, this one tells a gentler, more intimate story: the story of the women who raised the royal children of the Malwa Sultanate.
Built in the late 15th century, during the flourishing period of Mandu’s Khilji rulers, this domed structure is believed to have been dedicated to a royal midwife — a woman entrusted with nurturing the future heirs of the kingdom. Though often called a “mahal,” its form and layout reflect a tomb, marking the resting place of someone who held quiet importance within the palace walls.
The western side still shows its arched chambers, and traces of the once-lush Lal Bagh garden remind us that this was not a forgotten corner but a respected space within Mandu’s royal world. Today, the structure stands in silence, carrying the soft echo of care, loyalty, and a woman’s unseen service that shaped royal childhoods centuries ago.

मांडू की पहाड़ियों में बसे भव्य महलों और जल महलों के बीच एक छोटी-सी, पर बेहद अर्थपूर्ण इमारत चुपचाप खड़ी है — दाई का महल। इतिहासकार इसे एक मकबरा मानते हैं, जिसे शाही बच्चों की परवरिश करने वाली दाई की स्मृति में बनाया गया था।
मालवा सल्तनत के 15वीं शताब्दी के दौर, विशेषकर सुल्तान ग़ियासुद्दीन खिलजी के शासन में, जब मांडू अपनी समृद्धि और स्थापत्य कला के चरम पर था, तब यह संरचना बनाई गई। यह बताती है कि शाही जीवन में दाइयों की भूमिका कितनी सम्मानित थी — वे केवल देखभाल करने वाली नहीं, बल्कि भविष्य के वारिसों की प्रथम गुरू होती थीं।
गुंबददार छत, पश्चिम दिशा की मेहराबदार कोठरियाँ, और इसके पास फैला हुआ कभी हरा-भरा लाल बाग — ये सब इस इमारत के शांत वैभव को आज भी महसूस कराते हैं।
समय के साथ-साथ यह महल एक स्मारक में बदल गया, लेकिन इसकी दीवारें आज भी उस निष्ठा और सेवा की कहानी फुसफुसाती हैं जो इतिहास की किताबों में शायद ही कभी दिखाई देती है।
