Before Meerut College had its own campus in 1892, its earliest classes were held inside a modest school building in Kesarganj, Meerut. That building still exists today — known as the Town School, constructed in 1874.
The school was founded by Shri Nandram Contractor, a respected citizen of Meerut whose life story reflects extraordinary philanthropy. Having no children of his own, he chose to dedicate his entire wealth to the cause of education. To ensure that this mission continued for generations, he established the Raja Ram Nandram Charitable Trust and transferred his property to it so that poor children could receive education.
Through this remarkable act, Town School became more than just a local institution. It became a symbol of how individual vision can shape the educational future of an entire city.
When Meerut College was established on 15 July 1892, it began with only a small number of students and teachers. During its earliest days the college temporarily conducted classes in a municipal school building in the city before shifting to its own campus soon afterwards. Local historical accounts identify this Town School building at Kesarganj as that early academic space associated with the beginnings of Meerut College.
More than 150 years later, this quiet structure continues to remind Meerut that the foundations of education are often laid not only by institutions but also by individuals whose generosity shapes generations.

टाउन स्कूल मेरठ (1874) – मेरठ कॉलेज (1892) का प्रारम्भिक शैक्षणिक केंद्र
मेरठ के केसरगंज क्षेत्र में स्थित टाउन स्कूल केवल एक पुरानी इमारत नहीं है, बल्कि यह शहर के शैक्षणिक इतिहास से जुड़ी एक महत्वपूर्ण विरासत भी है। इस विद्यालय का निर्माण सन 1874 में मेरठ के प्रतिष्ठित नागरिक श्री नंदराम कांट्रेक्टर ने करवाया था।
नंदराम कांट्रेक्टर की कोई संतान नहीं थी। इसलिए उन्होंने अपनी सम्पूर्ण संपत्ति समाज के गरीब और जरूरतमंद बच्चों की शिक्षा के लिए समर्पित करने का निर्णय लिया। इसी उद्देश्य से उन्होंने “राजा राम नंदराम चैरिटेबल ट्रस्ट” की स्थापना की और अपनी संपत्ति इस ट्रस्ट को समर्पित कर दी, ताकि आने वाली पीढ़ियों को शिक्षा का अवसर मिलता रहे।
यह विद्यालय आगे चलकर मेरठ की उच्च शिक्षा के इतिहास से भी जुड़ गया। जब 15 जुलाई 1892 को मेरठ कॉलेज की स्थापना हुई, तब उसके शुरुआती दिनों में बहुत कम विद्यार्थी और शिक्षक थे। उस समय कॉलेज की प्रारंभिक कक्षाएँ नगर के एक विद्यालय भवन में संचालित की गईं और कुछ समय बाद उसे उसके नए परिसर में स्थानांतरित कर दिया गया। स्थानीय इतिहासकारों के अनुसार यह वही टाउन स्कूल भवन था जहाँ मेरठ कॉलेज की शुरुआती कक्षाएँ संचालित हुई थीं।
आज लगभग डेढ़ सदी बाद भी यह विद्यालय हमें यह याद दिलाता है कि शिक्षा की असली नींव केवल संस्थाओं से नहीं बल्कि उन लोगों से बनती है जिन्होंने समाज के भविष्य के लिए अपना सब कुछ समर्पित कर दिया।
