Known simply as Sunder Burj, this elegant early Mughal tomb derives its name from the word “Sunder,” meaning beautiful. And beautiful it truly is. Built in the early 16th century, during the formative years of Mughal rule in India, Sunder Burj is among the oldest surviving Mughal funerary monuments in Delhi. Its most extraordinary feature lies inside: a breathtaking geometric ceiling crafted in lime plaster and stucco, regarded as one of the finest surviving examples of decorative plasterwork in the city. Yet the greatest mystery of Sunder Burj is not its architecture. It is the silence surrounding the person buried within. No inscription identifies the occupant. No chronicle preserves a name. But the monument’s refined artistry and prestigious location suggest that the tomb belonged to a nobleman or courtier of considerable importance in the early Mughal court. Time erased the identity, but preserved the beauty. For decades, the monument stood neglected. Then, through the meticulous efforts of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture in partnership with the Archaeological Survey of India, Sunder Burj was carefully restored using traditional materials and craftsmanship. In 2016, it became part of the expanded UNESCO World Heritage buffer associated with Humayun’s Tomb within Sunder Nursery. Today, Sunder Burj reminds us that history does not always preserve names.
