Hidden in the rugged landscape of Morena, just a short distance from Gwalior, lies a cluster of ancient shrines that time almost forgot. The Nareshwar Group of Temples, dating back to the 8th–9th century, stand quietly against a rocky hillside — not as ruins, but as survivors of an era long gone.
Built under the powerful Gurjara-Pratihara dynasty, these 21–22 sandstone temples reflect the early evolution of North India’s Nagara-style architecture. Each shrine, carved with precision, seems to rise organically from the hill itself — as if the mountain decided to take the form of devotion.
At the heart of the complex lies a serene rock-cut water tank, embraced on three sides by temples dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu, and Shakti. Unlike grand, bustling pilgrimage centers, Nareshwar offers something far rarer — solitude. A sense of discovery. A feeling that you’ve stumbled upon a secret preserved by centuries.
For years, these temples lay buried under neglect, until the Archaeological Survey of India carefully excavated and restored them, bringing this forgotten heritage back into the light — much like the nearby Bateshwar temples.
Today, Nareshwar is not just an archaeological site. It is a quiet reminder — that even in silence, history continues to breathe.

नरेश्वर मंदिर समूह, मुरैना – पत्थरों में बसी भूली हुई गूंज
कुछ स्थान इतिहास को बोलते हुए दिखाते हैं… और कुछ ऐसे होते हैं, जहाँ इतिहास खामोशी में महसूस होता है।
मुरैना के शांत और rugged इलाके में, ग्वालियर से कुछ दूरी पर, एक ऐसा ही स्थल छिपा हुआ है — नरेश्वर मंदिर समूह। 8वीं–9वीं शताब्दी में निर्मित ये प्राचीन मंदिर आज भी समय के थपेड़ों के बीच अडिग खड़े हैं, मानो सदियों से अपनी कहानी संजोए हुए हों।
गुर्जर-प्रतिहार वंश के शासनकाल में बने ये लगभग 21–22 बलुआ पत्थर के मंदिर उत्तर भारत की नागर शैली की शुरुआती झलक प्रस्तुत करते हैं। इन मंदिरों की बनावट ऐसी प्रतीत होती है जैसे पहाड़ी ने स्वयं को भक्ति के रूप में ढाल लिया हो।
इस परिसर के मध्य स्थित एक चट्टान से तराशा गया जलकुंड, जिसके तीन ओर मंदिरों की श्रृंखला है — शिव, विष्णु और शक्ति को समर्पित। यहाँ न भीड़ है, न शोर… बस एक गहरी शांति, जो इस स्थान को और भी दिव्य बना देती है।
कभी उपेक्षा के कारण ये मंदिर खंडहरों में बदल गए थे, लेकिन भारतीय पुरातत्व सर्वेक्षण ने इन्हें पुनः खोजकर और संरक्षित कर, इस धरोहर को नई पहचान दी — ठीक वैसे ही जैसे पास स्थित बटेश्वर मंदिर समूह।
आज नरेश्वर केवल एक पुरातात्विक स्थल नहीं, बल्कि यह इस बात का प्रमाण है कि इतिहास कभी समाप्त नहीं होता… वह बस प्रतीक्षा करता है, खोजे जाने की।
