Death Anniversary of Black Prince Maharaja Duleep Singh passed away on October 22, 1893, at the age of 55 in his hotel room in Paris. Maharaja Duleep Singh's wish to return his body to India was not honored, due to fear of unrest. His body was buried at Elveden Church,England beside the graves of his wife Maharani Bamba and his son Prince Edward Albert Duleep Singh. The graves are located on the west side of the Church. Maharaja Dalip Singh, "Black Prince of Perthshire," was the last Maharaja of Sikh Raj and the youngest son of the legendary "Lion of the Punjab" Maharaja Ranjit Singh and the "Messalina of the Punjab" Maharani Jind Kaur. He came to power after a series of plottings, in which several other campaigners to the throne and to the Koh-i-Noor diamond, killed each other. After his exile to Britain at age 13, he was befriended by Queen Victoria, to whom the Koh-i-Noor diamond was also presented through him by Lord Dalhousie in June 1850 after it was confiscated by the British Raj following the British capture of the Punjab, India, after the British had defeated the Sikhs. From that date the diamond became part of the Crown Jewels, set in the Crown of Queen Elizabeth, and on display in the Jewel House in the Tower of London. Today he is considered as Britain's first Sikh settler, having been in the country since 1854, after being overthrow and his country captured by the British Raj in 1849.
