A Brother’s Love Beyond Death: The Tale of Hardoul.
In the heart of Bundelkhand breathes a story of sacrifice and eternal faith — the legend of Dinman Hardoul Singh, fondly remembered as Lala Hardoul.
Born in 1664 to King Vir Singh Deo of Orchha and younger brother to Jhujhar Singh, Hardoul’s short life became a symbol of devotion and purity.
Court intrigue once cast a dark shadow over the royal family. Rumours whispered that Hardoul shared an illicit bond with his brother’s wife, Rani Champavati. Enraged, Jhujhar Singh ordered his queen to poison Hardoul to prove her loyalty. Unable to let his sister-in-law suffer dishonour, Hardoul drank the poison himself — choosing sacrifice over suspicion.
Years later, when their sister Kunjawati sought help for her daughter’s wedding, Jhujhar mocked her to “invite the dead Hardoul.”
That night, legend says, Hardoul returned in spirit, unseen but felt — offering bhat at the ceremony and blessing the bride. From that day onward, every household in Bundelkhand began inviting Hardoul to weddings, leaving a card for him and seeking his unseen blessings.
His palace — the Diwan Hardaul Palace near Orchha’s Ram Raja Temple — still glows with the golden hue of faith.
Centuries may have passed, but his name continues to echo through every song of devotion sung in Bundelkhand.
True love and honour never die — they simply transcend time.

एक भाई की अमर व्रतमयी कथा — हरदौल की कहानी
बुंदेलखंड की मिट्टी में एक ऐसी कथा बसती है जिसे सदियाँ भी मिटा नहीं सकीं।
दिनमन हरदौल सिंह, जिन्हें लाला हरदौल कहा जाता है, 1664 में ओरछा नरेश वीर सिंह देव के घर जन्मे और 1688 में 24 वर्ष की आयु में अपने प्राण न्योछावर कर दिए।
राजदरबार की फुसफुसाहटों ने भाई-भाई में अविश्वास की दीवार खड़ी कर दी। कहा गया कि हरदौल और भाभी रानी चंपावती के बीच अनुचित संबंध हैं।
राजा झुंझार सिंह ने क्रोध में आकर रानी को आदेश दिया कि वह हरदौल को स्वयं अपने हाथों से जहर दे।
जब रानी ऐसा न कर सकीं, तो हरदौल ने अपनी भाभी की इज़्ज़त और परिवार की मर्यादा बचाने के लिए स्वयं जहर पी लिया।
समय बीता। बहन कुंजाबाई ने जब अपनी बेटी की शादी में भात लाने के लिए झुंझार से कहा, तो उसने व्यंग्य में कहा — “अपने हरदौल भाई को बुला लो।”
कुंजाबाई रोती हुई हरदौल की समाधि पर पहुँची — जहाँ चमत्कार हुआ। हरदौल अदृश्य रूप में आए और अपनी भांजी की शादी में भात दिया।
तब से बुंदेलखंड की हर शादी में हरदौल को निमंत्रण दिया जाता है। लोग आज भी उनके नाम से कार्ड भेजते हैं, यह मानकर कि उनका आशीर्वाद भंडारे में कभी कमी नहीं आने देता।
ओरछा का दीवान हरदौल पैलेस, रामराजा मंदिर के पास स्थित, आज भी उस त्याग की गाथा कहता है।
हरदौल की यह कहानी सिखाती है कि सच्चा प्रेम और आस्था मृत्यु से भी परे होती है।
