“लालकुर्ती” का मतलब है लाल कमीज़ — यह नाम ब्रिटिश सैनिकों की लाल वर्दियों से जुड़ा है, जो औपनिवेशिक काल में यहाँ तैनात रहते थे।
यह इलाका उन्हीं रेड कोट रेजिमेंट्स का बसेरा था — जहाँ उनके बैरक, मेस और छावनी बाज़ार हुआ करते थे। समय के साथ स्थानीय लोग इसे “लालकुर्ती” कहने लगे — और यही नाम आज भी शहर की पहचान बन चुका है।
अंबाला, पुणे और कानपुर जैसे शहरों में भी ऐसे ही क्षेत्रों को “लालकुर्ती” कहा जाता है।
