1. Letters Printed in Meerut
In 1868, a year before his death, Ghalib’s Oud-e-Hindi—a collection of 173 letters—was printed at Mujtabai Press, Khairnagar, Meerut. These letters capture his reflections after the destruction of Delhi, blending grief with wit, and became a window into his private world.
2. Old Tom & Meerut Cantonment
Ghalib was famously fond of wine and whisky. His favorite, “Old Tom”, reached him through British contacts at the Meerut Cantonment. He even once considered moving to Patiala, but abandoned the idea fearing it would cut him off from this supply line. Instead, he sent Mughal chefs and artisans to enrich Patiala’s royal kitchens—while he stayed close to his source.
3. Mussoorie’s Brew & Ghalib’s Quip
Whisky was also brewed at Mackinnon’s Brewery, Mussoorie, and supplied to cantonments like Meerut. Ghalib is said to have remarked:
“Mussoorie ki hawa hi nahi, paani mein bhi nasha hai.”
4. Wit That Saved His Life
During 1857, when interrogated by a British colonel if he was Muslim, Ghalib replied:
“Half—I drink wine, but I don’t eat pork.”
That wit earned him freedom.
Meerut, thus, was more than just a city to Ghalib. It was both a literary cradle and a lifeline for his indulgences.

1857 की पहली चिंगारी के लिए मशहूर मेरठ, एक और अनोखी कड़ी से भी जुड़ा है – मिर्ज़ा ग़ालिब।
1. खतों की छपाई मेरठ में
1868 में, ग़ालिब की किताब ऊद-ए-हिन्दी (173 खत) मेरठ के मुझ्तबाई प्रेस, खैरनगर से छपी। इनमें दिल्ली की तबाही के बाद की उनकी तन्हाई, दर्द और हाज़िरजवाबी दर्ज है।
2. ‘ओल्ड टॉम’ और मेरठ कैंट
ग़ालिब को शराब और व्हिस्की का गहरा शौक़ था। उनकी पसंदीदा “ओल्ड टॉम” व्हिस्की मेरठ कैंटोनमेंट से मिलती थी। पटियाला जाने का प्रस्ताव उन्होंने सिर्फ़ इस डर से ठुकरा दिया कि कहीं ये रसद न टूट जाए। उन्होंने खुद न जाकर मुग़ल बावर्चियों और कारीगरों को पटियाला भेजा ताकि वहाँ मुग़ल खानपान जारी रह सके।
3. मसूरी की भट्टी और ग़ालिब का जुमला
मसूरी के मैक्किनन ब्रूअरी से बनी शराब मेरठ कैंट पहुँचती थी। ग़ालिब ने कहा था:
“मसूरी की हवा ही नहीं, पानी में भी नशा है।”
4. हाज़िरजवाबी जिसने जान बचाई
1857 में अंग्रेज़ अफ़सर ने पूछा – “क्या तुम मुसलमान हो?”
ग़ालिब बोले – “आधा। शराब पीता हूँ, सूअर नहीं खाता।”
उनकी यह बात सुनकर अंग्रेज़ हँस पड़ा और ग़ालिब बच निकले।
इस तरह मेरठ ग़ालिब की ज़िन्दगी में एक साहित्यिक केंद्र और रोज़ाना की राहत दोनों रहा।
