In the quiet lanes of Sardhana near Meerut, in 1844, a child was born into a family of jewellers — a beginning that would one day shape India’s visual memory. Raja Deen Dayal, known in family lineage as Deen Dayal Jain, did not merely take photographs; he preserved an entire era before modern India took form.
Trained as an engineer at the Thomason College of Civil Engineering, Roorkee (now IIT Roorkee) in 1866, his journey began with precision and structure. But by the 1870s, his path turned towards the lens. Between 1875–76, he documented the Royal Tour of the Prince and Princess of Wales, marking his early recognition.
In the early 1880s, travelling across Bundelkhand with Sir Lepel Griffin, he captured the region’s ancient architecture. This work resulted in the celebrated portfolio “Famous Monuments of Central India”, comprising 86 photographs — a defining moment in India’s photographic history.
Leaving government service, he devoted himself fully to photography. In 1885, he was appointed court photographer to the sixth Nizam of Hyderabad, Mahbub Ali Khan. That same year, he was also appointed photographer to the Viceroy of India — a rare distinction. It was during this phase that he established his iconic studio, Raja Deen Dayal & Sons.
Recognising his excellence, the Nizam conferred upon him the honorary title “Raja”. In 1897, his stature reached the British Crown, when he was appointed photographer to Queen Victoria. He later documented the Royal Tour of the Prince and Princess of Wales in 1905–06, further cementing his legacy.
Yet beyond royal courts and imperial recognition, his roots remained connected to Meerut. His family legacy continued in the region, and his grandson, Shri Amichand Ji Jain, was married at the historic Kishan Flour Mill in Meerut — a detail preserved in local memory.
From Sardhana to the grand courts of India and Britain, Raja Deen Dayal Jain did not simply capture images — he preserved time itself.

1844 में मेरठ के पास स्थित सरधना में एक सर्राफ परिवार में जन्मे राजा दीन दयाल, जिनका पारिवारिक नाम जैन था, ने केवल तस्वीरें नहीं खींचीं — उन्होंने एक पूरे युग को संरक्षित कर दिया।
उन्होंने 1866 में थॉमसन कॉलेज ऑफ सिविल इंजीनियरिंग, रुड़की (वर्तमान IIT रुड़की) से इंजीनियरिंग प्रशिक्षण प्राप्त किया। 1875–76 में उन्होंने प्रिंस और प्रिंसेस ऑफ वेल्स के रॉयल टूर का चित्रण किया, जिससे उन्हें प्रारंभिक पहचान मिली।
1880 के दशक में सर लेपेल ग्रिफिन के साथ बुंदेलखंड की यात्रा के दौरान उन्होंने ऐतिहासिक स्मारकों का दस्तावेज़ीकरण किया। इसी का परिणाम था “फेमस मॉन्यूमेंट्स ऑफ सेंट्रल इंडिया”, जिसमें 86 तस्वीरें शामिल थीं।
सरकारी सेवा छोड़कर उन्होंने पूरी तरह फोटोग्राफी को अपनाया। 1885 में उन्हें हैदराबाद के छठे निज़ाम महबूब अली खान का दरबारी फोटोग्राफर नियुक्त किया गया। उसी वर्ष वे वायसराय के भी फोटोग्राफर बने और “राजा दीन दयाल एंड सन्स” की स्थापना की।
उनकी प्रतिभा के सम्मान में निज़ाम ने उन्हें “राजा” की उपाधि दी। 1897 में उन्हें महारानी विक्टोरिया का फोटोग्राफर नियुक्त किया गया। 1905–06 में उन्होंने पुनः प्रिंस और प्रिंसेस ऑफ वेल्स के रॉयल टूर को अपने कैमरे में कैद किया।
उनका मेरठ से संबंध हमेशा बना रहा। उनके पौत्र श्री अमीचंद जी जैन का विवाह मेरठ के प्रसिद्ध किशन फ्लोर मिल में हुआ — जो आज भी स्थानीय स्मृतियों में जीवित है।
सरधना से लेकर शाही दरबारों तक, राजा दीन दयाल जैन ने समय को अमर कर दिया।
