At a chaotic traffic crossing near Nizamuddin, Delhi… stands a monument most people pass without ever noticing.
Sabz Burj.
Built in the 1530s, soon after Babur changed India’s course at the First Battle of Panipat, this octagonal tomb quietly marks the very beginning of Mughal architecture—older than even the grand Humayun’s Tomb nearby.
But its real story isn’t outside.
It lies above you.
A ceiling painted with pure gold and lapis lazuli—considered the earliest surviving painted ceiling of the Mughal era, with no parallel anywhere else in the world. A rare blend of Timurid Central Asian artistry and early Mughal vision.
And yet… its biggest mystery remains.
No inscription. No confirmed identity.
Historians like Ebba Koch suggest it may have been built by Humayun for his mother Maham Begum—but this remains an interpretation, not a proven fact.
Time almost erased it.
Used as a police station, covered in cement, and damaged by poor repairs—it nearly lost its soul.
Until it was brought back.
Between 2018 and 2021, the Aga Khan Trust for Culture and Archaeological Survey of India carefully restored it—reviving lost craftsmanship and revealing its breathtaking ceiling after nearly a century.
Today, Sabz Burj doesn’t just stand.
It whispers… of a time when empires were just beginning.

दिल्ली के निज़ामुद्दीन क्षेत्र के एक व्यस्त चौराहे पर खड़ा एक स्मारक… जिसे लोग रोज़ देखते हैं, पर सच में समझते नहीं।
सब्ज़ बुर्ज।
1530 के दशक में बना यह अष्टकोणीय मकबरा, बाबर द्वारा पहला पानीपत का युद्ध के बाद स्थापित मुगल काल की शुरुआती इमारतों में से एक है—यह हुमायूं का मकबरा से भी पहले का है।
लेकिन इसकी असली कहानी बाहर नहीं… ऊपर छिपी है।
एक ऐसी छत, जिस पर शुद्ध सोने और लैपिस लाजुली से चित्रकारी की गई है—मुगल काल की सबसे प्राचीन जीवित पेंटेड छत, जिसका दुनिया में कोई दूसरा उदाहरण नहीं मिलता।
और फिर भी… यहाँ कौन दफन है, यह आज तक एक रहस्य है।
इतिहासकार एब्बा कोच के अनुसार संभव है कि इसे हुमायूं ने अपनी माता माहम बेगम के लिए बनवाया हो—लेकिन यह केवल एक अनुमान है, प्रमाणित तथ्य नहीं।
समय के साथ यह स्मारक उपेक्षा का शिकार हुआ—यहाँ तक कि इसे पुलिस स्टेशन के रूप में भी उपयोग किया गया, और गलत मरम्मतों ने इसकी सुंदरता को नुकसान पहुँचाया।
2018 से 2021 के बीच आगा खान ट्रस्ट फॉर कल्चर और भारतीय पुरातत्व सर्वेक्षण ने मिलकर इसे पुनर्जीवित किया—और लगभग 100 वर्षों बाद इसकी अद्भुत छत फिर से सामने आई।
आज सब्ज़ बुर्ज सिर्फ खड़ा नहीं है।
यह फुसफुसाता है—एक साम्राज्य के जन्म की कहानी।
