Just a few kilometres from Jaipur, in the historic town of Sanganer, stands one of the most mysterious Digambara Jain shrines in India — the revered Sanghiji Temple, formally known as Shri Digambar Jain Atishaya Kshetra. Dedicated to Lord Adinath (Rishabhanatha), the temple is believed in Jain tradition to house a principal idol considered to be around 4,000 years old. The visible structure, built in red sandstone and completed in phases, bears inscriptions indicating that its final major phase was completed around the 10th century CE. Its carved pillars, soaring shikharas and intricate stonework are often compared to the celebrated Dilwara Temples of Mount Abu. But the true mystery lies below. According to long-standing Jain belief, the temple extends deep underground. Hidden beneath the visible shrine are sacred subterranean chambers guarded by Yakshas, divine protectors of the Jain faith. These underground levels are traditionally kept closed, and it is believed that only a spiritually accomplished Digambara monk who has observed lifelong celibacy can enter them. For generations, this was spoken of in whispers. Then, in 1999, those whispers became reality. During a historic visit, Muni Sudhasagar Ji Maharaj descended into the underground chambers and emerged with thirty-nine extraordinary ancient idols, many described as being studded with precious gemstones. He later recounted encountering protective Yakshas in the form of serpents, guardians of these sacred treasures hidden beneath the earth for centuries. For devotees, it was not merely an archaeological event. It was a moment when faith, legend and living spirituality converged. Even today, Sanghiji remains one of Jainism’s most revered Atishaya Kshetras — a place where history descends beneath the surface, and silence itself seems to guard the sacred.
