Beneath the rolling grasslands of southern Ukraine, under an ancient burial mound known as Tovsta Mohyla, history lay undisturbed for over two millennia.
In 1971, Ukrainian archaeologist Borys Mozolevskyi made a discovery that would echo across the world of archaeology — a magnificent golden pectoral hidden within a royal Scythian kurgan near present-day Pokrov in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast.
Dating to the 4th century BCE, during the height of Scythian power across the northern Black Sea region and the Eurasian Steppe, this crescent-shaped masterpiece reflects the strength and sophistication of a semi-nomadic Iranian-speaking civilisation that flourished for nearly a thousand years.
Crafted from solid 24-carat gold, the pectoral measures approximately 30.6 cm in diameter and weighs around 1.15 kilograms. But beyond its weight in gold lies its weight in meaning.
Its design unfolds in three symbolic layers:
• The upper register portrays scenes of Scythian daily life — warriors, livestock, and intimate human interaction.
• The middle register reflects nature — plants and animals rendered with astonishing delicacy, soldered onto a supporting gold plate for strength.
• The lower register evokes mythology and cosmology, hinting at the Scythian understanding of the universe.
Scholars suggest it may have been crafted either by master Scythian goldsmiths or by highly skilled Greek artisans, possibly connected to the ancient Black Sea city of Panticapaeum. Regardless of origin, the technical precision is extraordinary — dozens of individually cast figures meticulously soldered together into one harmonious composition.
Today, this unparalleled treasure is preserved at the Museum of Historical Treasures of Ukraine in Kyiv — a timeless testament to the artistry and identity of the Scythian world.
It is not merely jewellery.

यूक्रेन के दक्षिणी घास के मैदानों में स्थित एक प्राचीन समाधि-टीला — तोव्स्ता मोहिला — सदियों तक अपने भीतर एक अनमोल रहस्य छिपाए रहा।
सन् 1971 में पुरातत्वविद बोरिस मोज़ोलेव्स्की ने इस शाही कर्गान से एक अद्भुत स्वर्ण पेक्टोरल की खोज की। यह चौथी शताब्दी ईसा पूर्व का माना जाता है, जब स्किथियन शक्ति अपने चरम पर थी।
शुद्ध 24 कैरेट सोने से निर्मित यह अर्धचंद्राकार आभूषण लगभग 30.6 सेंटीमीटर व्यास का और लगभग 1.15 किलोग्राम वज़नी है।
इसके तीन स्तर स्किथियन जीवन-दर्शन को दर्शाते हैं:
• ऊपरी भाग – दैनिक जीवन और योद्धाओं के दृश्य
• मध्य भाग – प्रकृति से उनका गहरा संबंध
• निचला भाग – ब्रह्मांड और पौराणिक मान्यताएँ
