On the quiet hills of Tijara in Alwar stands a palace that was once an unfinished royal dream—and today, a revived heritage hotel that carries the breath of a forgotten era. The story begins in early 19th-century Alwar, when Maharaja Bakhtawar Singh fell deeply in love with a village girl who came to be known as Moosi Rani. After his death in 1814, she performed Sati and earned the title of Maharani. Their son, Balwant Singh, was granted one-third of the Alwar estate—Tijara, Kishangarh, Mandhan, Karnikot and Mundawar—under British policy that divided princely territories to tighten their rule. With this new dominion, Balwant Singh dreamed of building a magnificent palace in memory of his mother. In 1835, the construction of the Tijara Fort-Palace began. Skilled artisans from Kabul and Mughal Delhi shaped its arches, pavilions and courtyards. The design displayed a rare blend of Rajput-Afghan architecture infused with early colonial influences. The complex was envisioned in three parts—the Mardana Mahal for the royal men, the Rani Mahal for the queens and the Hawa Mahal, a pleasure palace overlooking the rolling Aravallis. Before this grand vision, the Maharaja had already laid gardens and built his personal palace at the foothills. But the dream never reached completion. In 1845, Balwant Singh died suddenly—believed by many to have been murdered. The unfinished palace was abandoned for over a century. Legends say even his loyal elephant and a pet parrot died refusing food after his death. The ruins remained silent until the early 2000s, when architect-historian Aman Nath and the Neemrana Hotels team took the responsibility of reviving the lost masterpiece. What the Maharaja could not see finished in his lifetime was gently restored, landscaped and brought back to life stone by stone.
