Vashishteshwar (Tiksi) Temple, Etawah. A Sacred Legacy Carved in Maratha Stone On the southern edge of Etawah stands the Tiksi Temple – a majestic Maratha-style shrine and one of the district’s most treasured cultural heritage sites. Built in 1780, the temple houses a Shivalinga established by sage Vashishtha himself. Legend says this was once a dense forest where Rishi Vashishtha consecrated the Vashishteshwar Mahadev. The site gained fame among ascetics and Shiva devotees for penance and prayers. In 1772, Maratha commander Sadashiv Bhau halted near the Yamuna River with his army to confront the Nawabs of Kannauj and Farrukhabad, who had sided with Ahmad Shah Abdali during the Third Battle of Panipat. Devotees advised him to perform Rudri Abhishek at this sacred Shivalinga to ensure victory. After their triumph, he fulfilled his vow by building the temple with arches and stairs in Maratha architectural style. The temple’s name evolved through eras — originally known for the Tikri (tripod stand used to drip water on the Shivalinga), the British pronounced it “Tiksi”, a name that stuck. Interestingly, in Marathi, stairs are called “Tiksi”, and this temple indeed rises via many steps from the ground level. Today, this divine site is also lovingly referred to as TT Temple — but its historical roots run deep in devotion, folklore, and Maratha valor. ???? मराठा विरासत से जुड़ा इटावा का टिक्सी मंदिर जहाँ वशिष्ठ मुनि और मराठा सरदारों की आस्था एक साथ मिलती है इटावा शहर के दक्षिणी किनारे पर स्थित टिक्सी मंदिर मराठा शैली में बना एक अद्भुत शिव मंदिर है। इस मंदिर में वशिष्ठ मुनि द्वारा स्थापित वशिष्ठेश्वर महादेव का शिवलिंग है, जो 1780 में मराठा सरदार द्वारा मन्नत पूरी होने के बाद बनवाया गया था। जनश्रुति के अनुसार, यह स्थान पहले बीहड़ जंगल था। ऋषि वशिष्ठ ने यहां शिवलिंग की स्थापना की थी। शिवभक्त यहाँ तपस्या व पूजा के लिए आते थे। पास ही यमुना नदी के घाट हैं, जहां से लोग ग्वालियर-भिंड की ओर नौकाओं से जाते थे। सन् 1772 में मराठा सरदार सदाशिव भाऊ अपनी सेना के साथ नवाबों से युद्ध के लिए रुके थे। नवाबों को हराने के लिए रुद्रीय अभिषेक की सलाह मिली और विजय प्राप्त होने के बाद उन्होंने मंदिर का निर्माण कराया। मंदिर का नाम ‘टिकरी मंदिर’ से ‘टिक्सी टेंपल’ और अब ‘टीटी मंदिर’ तक बदलता गया। गर्मियों में भक्त टिकरी (तिपाई) पर कलश रखकर शिवलिंग पर जल की बूंदें टपकाते थे — इसी से इसका नाम पड़ा। महाराष्ट्र की भाषा में सीढ़ी को टिक्सी कहा जाता है, और इस मंदिर में सीढ़ियाँ प्रमुख हैं। यह मंदिर इतिहास, आस्था और मराठा शक्ति का संगम है। .1
