About 7–10 kilometres from Kota city stands Abheda Mahal, an 18th-century pleasure palace built during the rule of the Hada Rajput rulers of Kota. Most historical references associate its construction with Maharav Umed Singh I (r. 1771–1819), though certain local accounts also connect it with Maharav Abhay Singh. What remains certain is its late 18th-century origin and its purpose — not as a fort of defence, but as a retreat of leisure. Overlooking the serene Abheda Lake, the three-storey structure functioned as a royal hunting lodge and monsoon pavilion. Contemporary descriptions and local tradition mention lotus-filled waters and even crocodiles inhabiting the adjacent tank in earlier times. Architecturally, the palace reflects Rajput planning with Mughal stylistic influences — open pavilions, arched corridors, symmetrical courtyards, airy terraces, and lake-facing balconies designed to catch cooling breezes. Unlike the imposing fortifications of Rajasthan, this mahal represents a softer, contemplative dimension of Rajput legacy.
