Agra Circuit House – From British Polo Ground to Political Stopover. The Agra Circuit House is a 125-year-old colonial bungalow that once echoed with British power and later hosted Indian political leaders. Built in 1900 under the direction of Lord Curzon—then Viceroy of India—it was designed to host high-ranking British guests visiting Agra. The structure was built on what was once a polo ground, now converted into a golf course. In the early days, East India Company officials stayed with Indian rulers and landlords. But following several political incidents that eroded trust, the British began building government guest houses—called Circuit Houses—across major Indian cities. Agra’s was among the earliest and most significant. The Circuit House gained a reputation for being haunted—stories rooted not in fact but in fiction. A British Commissioner’s daughter once penned a book of ghost stories set here, which was later published in America. Staff and officials affirm that there have never been any supernatural occurrences. At the FICCI Conference in 2023, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath shared a humorous anecdote: he once stayed overnight in the same building, waiting for ghosts to appear—but none did.
