The southern gateway of Agra Fort, known today as Amar Singh Gate, was originally Akbar Darwaza, reserved exclusively for Emperor Akbar. Its current name commemorates Rao Amar Singh of Jodhpur, a Rajput noble known for his unmatched bravery.
According to legend, Amar Singh slew Salabat Khan, Shah Jahan’s treasurer, right before the emperor’s eyes, and then leapt off the fort wall on horseback. The horse died, Amar Singh was captured and executed—but his valour left Shah Jahan awestruck. In tribute, the gate was renamed, and a red sandstone statue of his horse was placed at the site of the fateful leap.
Architecturally, Amar Singh Gate resembles Delhi Gate—with a drawbridge, high ramps, curved entry passages, and octagonal towers. Though not as ornate as other parts of the fort, the gate still shines with yellow, green, blue, and white glazed tiles in the lower panels. The upper parts remain plain but elegant, with domed chhatris and inverted lotus motifs.
Built between 1565–1573, it remains the only accessible entrance to Agra Fort today.

आज का मुख्य प्रवेश द्वार, कभी था अकबर दरवाज़ा
आगरा किले का दक्षिणी प्रवेश द्वार, जिसे आज हम अमर सिंह गेट के नाम से जानते हैं, पहले अकबर दरवाज़ा कहलाता था और इसे सम्राट अकबर और उनके खास कारवां के लिए आरक्षित रखा गया था।
एक रोमांचक कथा के अनुसार, जोधपुर के वीर राव अमर सिंह ने सम्राट शाहजहां के कोषाध्यक्ष सलाबत खान की हत्या दरबार में ही कर दी और फिर अपने घोड़े सहित किले की ऊँची दीवार से कूद पड़े। घोड़ा उस छलांग में मारा गया, अमर सिंह गिरफ्तार हुए और उन्हें मृत्युदंड मिला। परंतु उनकी बहादुरी से प्रभावित होकर शाहजहां ने इस दरवाजे का नाम अमर सिंह गेट रख दिया। कूदने की जगह पर उनके घोड़े की लाल पत्थर की प्रतिमा भी स्थापित की गई।
वास्तुकला की दृष्टि से, यह द्वार दिल्ली गेट से मेल खाता है—जिसमें खाई पर पुल, मोड़दार रास्ता, ऊँची ढलान, और अष्टकोणीय मीनारें हैं। यह उतना अलंकृत नहीं है, लेकिन इसके निचले हिस्सों में पीले, हरे, नीले और सफेद चमकदार टाइल्स से सजे पैनल हैं। ऊपरी भाग सादा है लेकिन सुंदर छतरियों और उल्टे कमल से सजा हुआ है।
1565 से 1573 के बीच बना यह प्रवेश द्वार आज आगरा किले का एकमात्र उपयोगी मार्ग है।
