Standing tall at the southern edge of Chanderi’s inner city, Badal Mahal Darwaza is perhaps the most iconic structure of this historic town in Madhya Pradesh. Built in the 15th century during the reign of Sultan Mahmood Shah Khilji I of Malwa, this majestic gateway once marked the entrance to the royal Badal Mahal — a palace that, though lost to time, lives on through this grand archway.
The gateway is adorned with a magnificent arched entrance flanked by tall fluted minarets. Above the main door lies a beautifully carved gap with another arch embedded with four distinct jaali patterns, each showcasing the intricate craftsmanship of the era. The floral roundels, miniature arches, and geometric motifs reflect the artistic excellence of the Malwa Sultanate period.
Originally built to welcome royal dignitaries and visitors into the kingdom, the site also houses an underground palace revealed through archaeological excavations. Today, Badal Mahal Darwaza is not only a testament to Chanderi’s glorious past but also a living emblem — its motif features on official seals and on the handwoven Chanderi sarees, keeping its heritage alive through threads and letters alike.

मध्य प्रदेश के चंदेरी नगर के दक्षिणी छोर पर स्थित बादल महल दरवाज़ा इस ऐतिहासिक शहर की सबसे प्रमुख और भव्य संरचनाओं में से एक है। इसका निर्माण 15वीं शताब्दी में मालवा के सुल्तान महमूद शाह खिलजी प्रथम के शासनकाल में कराया गया था। यह दरवाज़ा उस समय के प्रसिद्ध बादल महल के प्रवेश द्वार के रूप में कार्य करता था — एक महल जो आज भले ही अस्तित्व में नहीं है, लेकिन इसकी स्मृति इस भव्य द्वार के रूप में आज भी जीवित है।
इस प्रवेश द्वार में एक ऊँचा धनुषाकार मेहराब है जिसके दोनों ओर नक्काशीदार मीनारें बनी हुई हैं। मुख्य द्वार के ऊपर चार अलग-अलग पैटर्नों वाली नाजुक जालियों से सजी एक और मेहराब बनी है। फूलों के गोलाकार डिजाइन, छोटी मेहराबें और ज्यामितीय आकृतियाँ उस समय की अद्भुत शिल्पकला को प्रदर्शित करती हैं।
यह दरवाज़ा मूल रूप से चंदेरी राज्य में आने वाले गणमान्य अतिथियों के स्वागत के लिए बनाया गया था। परिसर में पुरातात्विक खुदाई के दौरान एक भूमिगत महल भी खोजा गया है। आज बादल महल दरवाज़ा केवल एक ऐतिहासिक धरोहर नहीं बल्कि चंदेरी की पहचान है — यही प्रतीक अब चंदेरी की प्रसिद्ध हस्तनिर्मित साड़ियों और डाक की मुहरों पर अंकित होता है।
