Battisi Bawdi, the grand stepwell of Chanderi in Madhya Pradesh, stands as a four-story marvel measuring 60 × 60 feet, its 32 ghats descending into history and legend. Commissioned by Taghi—the son of the local revenue officer—during Sultan Ghyasuddin Khilji’s reign and completed in 1484 AD, the inscriptions carved in elegant Naskh script celebrate both craftsmanship and faith. They also reveal that a garden and a mosque—as magnificent as Al-Aqsa—once graced the complex.
What truly captivates visitors is the folklore of its perpetually soothing water level—said to remain unchanged so long as there is water in the oceans. Scholars suggest a hidden natural spring may keep the well replenished, a testament to medieval ingenuity.

बत्तीस बावड़ी, मध्यप्रदेश के चंदेरी में स्थित यह अनुपम जल संरचना, 60×60 फीट आयताकार और चार मंज़िल गहरी है, जिसमें 32 घाट इसकी विशिष्ट पहचान हैं। इसे सुल्तान ग़यासुद्दीन ख़िलजी के शासनकाल में राजस्व अधिकारी (शारिक-उल-मुल्क) के पुत्र ताग़ी ने प्रारंभ कराया और 1484 ई. में पूर्ण कराया। नस्क़ लिपि में लिखित शिलालेख बताते हैं कि इसके साथ एक बगीचा और अल-अक्सा मस्जिद के समान एक शानदार मस्जिद भी बनाई गई थी।
इस बावड़ी का रहस्य है इसका सदैव स्थिर जलस्तर। कहा जाता है कि जब तक समुद्रों में पानी रहेगा, तब तक इस बावड़ी का पानी कभी कम नहीं होगा। विद्वान इसे प्राकृतिक झरने से जुड़े होने की वजह से सम्भव मानते हैं।
