There are places where history fades with time… and then there is Nagari, where history still lingers beneath every step.
Located about 12 kilometers from Chittorgarh, this quiet village was once known as Madhyamika — a flourishing urban centre that thrived from the Mauryan period through the Gupta age. Long before the present temple stood here, this land was already witnessing the rise and fall of early civilizations.
Archaeological excavations have revealed structural remains dating back to the second half of the first millennium BCE, indicating one of the earliest phases of religious architecture in the region. Numerous punch-marked coins and other early currency finds suggest a vibrant economic and cultural life.
Historical references add even more depth. The great grammarian Patanjali (circa 150 BCE) mentions Madhyamika being besieged by a Yavana king, describing it as a recent event of his time. This transforms Nagari from a silent village into a site once connected with Indo-Greek incursions into India.
Over time, the region saw the presence of the Sibi tribe, whose coins bear the inscription “majhamikaya sibi-janapadasa.” Later, it came under the Western Kshatrapas, followed by the Malavas and eventually the Hunas — each leaving behind traces of their rule.
Amidst these layered histories stands the Dewria Balaji Temple. While the present structure belongs to a later period, the sacredness of this site is rooted in a much older cultural and religious landscape. Nearby remains of a stupa built with moulded bricks and decorated with terracotta tiles further reinforce Nagari’s importance as an ancient spiritual centre.
Today, Nagari is quiet… but not empty. Its soil still carries the memory of empires, invasions, devotion, and continuity.

कुछ स्थान ऐसे होते हैं जहाँ इतिहास धीरे-धीरे मिट जाता है… और कुछ स्थान ऐसे होते हैं जहाँ इतिहास आज भी जीवित रहता है। नगरी उन्हीं में से एक है।
चित्तौड़गढ़ से लगभग 12 किलोमीटर दूर स्थित यह गाँव, प्राचीन काल में मध्यमिका के नाम से जाना जाता था। मौर्य काल से लेकर गुप्त काल तक यह एक समृद्ध और विकसित नगर रहा, जहाँ समय ने अनेक सभ्यताओं को आते-जाते देखा।
यहाँ हुए पुरातात्विक उत्खननों में पहली सहस्राब्दी ईसा पूर्व के उत्तरार्ध के अवशेष प्राप्त हुए हैं, जो इस क्षेत्र में प्रारंभिक धार्मिक संरचनाओं की उपस्थिति को दर्शाते हैं। यहाँ से प्राप्त पंच-चिह्नित सिक्के और अन्य प्राचीन मुद्राएँ इस नगर के समृद्ध आर्थिक जीवन की ओर संकेत करती हैं।
महान व्याकरणाचार्य पतंजलि (लगभग 150 ईसा पूर्व) ने अपने ग्रंथ महाभाष्य में मध्यमिका पर एक यवन शासक द्वारा किए गए आक्रमण का उल्लेख किया है, जिसे उन्होंने अपने समय की हाल की घटना बताया है। इससे यह स्थान एक ऐतिहासिक संघर्ष स्थल के रूप में भी सामने आता है।
समय के साथ यह क्षेत्र सिबि जनपद, पश्चिमी क्षत्रपों, मालवों और बाद में हूणों के अधीन रहा, जिनकी छाप आज भी यहाँ के इतिहास में देखी जा सकती है।
इन्हीं ऐतिहासिक परतों के बीच स्थित है देवरिया बालाजी मंदिर। वर्तमान मंदिर भले ही बाद के काल का हो, लेकिन इसकी पवित्रता इस प्राचीन भूमि से जुड़ी हुई है, जहाँ सदियों से धार्मिक आस्था निरंतर बनी हुई है। पास में स्थित एक स्तूप, जो ढली हुई ईंटों और सुंदर टेराकोटा टाइल्स से निर्मित है, इस स्थान की प्राचीन धार्मिक महत्ता को और भी मजबूत करता है।
आज नगरी शांत है… पर खाली नहीं। इसकी मिट्टी में आज भी इतिहास, आस्था और समय की परतें समाई हुई हैं।
