As you wander through the solemn ruins of the Lucknow Residency, you might stumble upon a lesser-known gate and climb a narrow flight of steps to find a quiet enclosure where time slowed down instead of rushing on. Here stands the twin structures known as the Mosque & Imambara, built in the true vernacular of Awadhi art.
In the 1830s, Nawab Nasir‑ud‑din Haider had passed away, leaving the complex to his European wife, Malika Mukhdarah Aliya (Vilayati Begum). Her step-sister Ashrafunnisa Begum made this enclave her own and raised a mosque and imambara here in frescoed stucco-ornament, deliberately resisting the Indo-European styling that marked the rest of the Residency complex.
When the Revolt of 1857 tore through the city, this place too witnessed the storm. The imambara lost its roof and the mosque’s domes bear cannon-mark scars — the traces of those bullets and shells remain visible even today. The mosque stands tall on a high pedestal, entered via congested stairs, as though echoing the arduous journey of faith amid war and exile.
Pause inside: the air is heavy with solemn stillness, the walls whisper the stories of the Begum, the builders and the besieged; a space where the empire’s gunfire gave way to quiet prayers. In that echo, you realise — Lucknow’s heritage is not just of empire, but of Awadh’s enduring soul.

जब आप लखनऊ रेज़ीडेंसी के बिखरे-खंभों के बीच चलते-चलते एक सुनसान गेट पर चढ़ते हैं, वहां संकरी स्टॉलों के बाद खुलता है एक आँगन जहाँ समय थमता हुआ महसूस होता है। वही है मस्जिद व इमामबाड़ा, अवधी कला-आभा में निर्मित एक शांत कोना।
1830 के दशक में नवाब नासिरुद्दीन हैदर के चले जाने के बाद यहाँ की गाड़ी उनकी यूरोपीय पत्नी, मलिका मुख्दर्रा अलीया उर्फ़ विलायती बेगम के हवाले हुई थी। उनकी सौतेली बहन अशरफुन्निसा ने इसी परिसर में एक मस्जिद एवं इमामबाड़ा बनवाया — जहाँ ईंट-पत्थर पर यूरोपीय आभा नहीं, बल्कि अवधी हिलोरें बहीं।
1857 की बग़ावत ने लखनऊ को फूँक दिया और इस कोने को भी अमान न छोड़ा। इमामबाड़ा पूरी तरह छत खो बैठा, मस्जिद के गुंबद-दीवारों पर आज भी तोप-गोली के निशान हैं। ऊँचे चबूतरे पर बनी मस्जिद तक पहुँचने की संकरी सीढ़ियाँ जैसे उस विश्वास की यात्रा को फिर से ज़िंदा करती-हैं, जो युद्ध-गोलाबारी के बीच भी थमी नहीं।
भँवर-गुल्लों की गूंज खतम हुई, लेकिन इन दीवारों की खामोश दुआएँ आज भी उन खामोश मस्जिद-इमामबाड़ा में गूंजती-हैं। यह जगह याद दिलाती है कि लखनऊ सिर्फ़ औपनिवेशिक नहीं था — यह था अवधी-रूह का घर।
