In the historic heart of Lucknow stands a towering sentinel of time — the Husainabad Clock Tower, built between 1880 and 1881 to commemorate the arrival of Sir George Couper, the Lieutenant-Governor of the North-Western Provinces. Commissioned under the initiative connected with Nawab Nasir-ud-Din Haidar Shah and designed by British architect Richard Roskell Bayne, this majestic structure rises to nearly 67 metres, often described as the tallest clock tower in India.
Its design beautifully blends Victorian and Gothic sensibilities with subtle Mughal influences. The clock itself is a masterpiece — a twelve-petalled golden flower dial, a fourteen-foot-long pendulum, and intricate gunmetal machinery that once kept the city’s rhythm alive.
After falling silent in 1984, the tower entered a long slumber. But in 2010, two passionate citizens — Captain Paritosh Chauhan and Akhilesh Agarwal — took it upon themselves to restore the clock pro bono. Working tirelessly for over a year, they revived the mechanism, and in 2011, after 27 silent years, the clock chimed again, echoing hope and heritage across Lucknow’s old quarters.
Today, standing beside the Rumi Darwaza and close to the Bara Imambara, the Husainabad Clock Tower is not just a landmark — it is a living chronicle of Lucknow’s layered past. A reminder that even when time halts, heritage can still breathe again through love, devotion and community effort.

लखनऊ के पुराने शहर की रूह में खड़ा हुसैनाबाद क्लॉक टॉवर सिर्फ एक घड़ी-मीनार नहीं, बल्कि समय का वह प्रहरी है जिसने 1880–81 से लेकर आज तक शहर की बदलती परंपराओं को देखा है। इसका निर्माण सर जॉर्ज कूपर के आगमन की स्मृति में किया गया था, और इसे ब्रिटिश आर्किटेक्ट रिचर्ड रोस्केल बेयने ने डिज़ाइन किया था। लगभग 221 फुट (लगभग 67 मीटर) ऊँचा यह टॉवर भारत के सबसे ऊँचे क्लॉक टावरों में गिना जाता है।
विक्टोरियन और गोथिक स्थापत्य शैली में मुगलियत की महीन छाप जोड़कर इसे एक अनोखा रूप दिया गया है। घड़ी का डायल सोने की बारह-पंखुड़ी वाली कली के आकार में बना है, और इसका 14 फुट का पेंडुलम उस समय की अद्भुत इंजीनियरिंग का प्रमाण है।
1984 में घड़ी रुक गई और शहर से उसकी घंटियों की ध्वनि गायब हो गई। फिर 2010 में परितोष चौहान और अखिलेश अग्रवाल जैसे दो समर्पित नागरिकों ने इसे बिना किसी शुल्क के ठीक करने का बीड़ा उठाया। महीनों की मेहनत के बाद 2011 में घड़ी फिर से बोली — पूरे 27 साल बाद। यह घटना सिर्फ एक मरम्मत नहीं, बल्कि शहर के प्रति प्रेम का प्रतीक बन गई।
रूमी दरवाज़ा और बड़ा इमामबाड़ा के पास खड़ा यह टॉवर आज भी बताता है कि लखनऊ की तहज़ीब, उसकी विरासत और उसकी कहानियाँ अभी भी जीवित हैं — बस सुनने वाले चाहिए।
