Majestic Remnants of Mughal Glory in Kairana
Kairana, once a cherished retreat of Mughal Emperor Jahangir, is remembered for its Nawab Talab and surrounding gardens, which he lovingly describes in his memoir Tuzuk-e-Jahangiri. But beyond the landscape, Jahangir cherished his “childhood companion” — Sheikh Hasan Hussu, later titled Mukarrab Khan.
Honored in the very first year of Jahangir’s reign, Mukarrab Khan rose to the high rank of 5000/5000 mansab, serving as Subedar of Gujarat and Bihar and later as the empire’s second Bakshi. During his lifetime, he adorned Kairana with new structures, renovated halls and jharokhas, and commissioned an immense garden said to hold nine lakh trees.
Jahangir visited this garden twice, in 1619 and 1620, praising its pistachio trees, Yamuna-fed Nawab Talab, and the luminous Suffa-e-Mahtabi platform for moonlit strolls.
Today, however, Nawab Talab lies neglected, filled with filth, encroached upon, and the once-majestic haveli has crumbled into ruins. What was once celebrated by Jahangir as “delightful and elevating” survives only as a shadow of its past.

ऐतिहासिक विरासत: मुगल कालीन कैराना
कैराना नगर कभी मुगल सम्राट जहाँगीर की पसंदीदा जगहों में शुमार था। नवाब तालाब और उसके चारों ओर लगे बाग़ उनकी आत्मकथा तुजुक-ए-जहांगीरी में विस्तार से वर्णित हैं। परंतु इस इतिहास का सबसे महत्वपूर्ण पहलू है जहाँगीर और मुकर्रब ख़ान का गहरा संबंध।
मुकर्रब ख़ान, जिनका वास्तविक नाम शेख़ हसन हस्सू था, शेख़ज़ादों के परिवार से थे। वे जहाँगीर के “बचपन के साथी” रहे और उनकी सेवाओं से प्रसन्न होकर सम्राट ने शासनकाल के पहले ही वर्ष में उन्हें “मुकर्रब ख़ान” की उपाधि दी। मुकर्रब ख़ान ने गुजरात और बिहार के सूबेदार तथा साम्राज्य के दूसरे बख़्शी जैसे उच्च पदों पर कार्य किया।
सक्रिय सेवा के दौरान उन्होंने कैराना में इमारतें, झरोखे और एक विशाल उद्यान का निर्माण कराया। कहा जाता है कि उस बाग़ में 9 लाख वृक्ष थे। जहाँगीर ने 1619 और 1620 में इस बाग़ का दौरा किया और लिखा कि वहाँ पिस्ता जैसे विदेशी वृक्ष, यमुना से आता निर्मल जल और सुफ़्फ़ा-ए-माहताबी नामक चाँदनी चबूतरा उनकी प्रसन्नता का कारण बने।
आज वही नवाब तालाब गंदगी, नालों और अतिक्रमण की गिरफ्त में है, बाग़ और हवेली खंडहर बन चुके हैं। जहाँगीर का प्रिय कैराना अब केवल इतिहास की स्मृतियों में जीवित है।
