In the heart of Orchha, Madhya Pradesh, stands the timeless Pravin Rai Mahal, built in 1618 by Prince (later King) Indrajit Singh. This palace was dedicated to his beloved Rai Pravin — a gifted poet and musician, remembered as the “Nightingale of Orchha.”
Also known as Anand Mandal Bagh and Rai Praveen Manika Bhavan, the palace later served as a lookout post for Orchha Fort, earning the name “Tope Khana.”
The three-storied structure features a central hall adorned with paintings of Rai Pravin in various moods, airy chambers with large windows, and gardens inspired by Mughal aesthetics. Its semi-subterranean summer room was ingeniously designed with passive cooling, keeping the interiors over 10 degrees cooler than outside.
Legend says that Emperor Akbar once summoned Rai Pravin to his court after hearing of her beauty. There, she recited a bold couplet declaring her devotion to Indrajit Singh. Impressed by her wit and loyalty, Akbar respectfully sent her back.
Pravin Rai remains an enduring symbol of love, loyalty, and art in Bundelkhand’s history.

मध्यप्रदेश के ओरछा में स्थित प्रवीन राई महल 1618 में राजकुमार (बाद में राजा) इंद्रजीत सिंह द्वारा उनकी प्रिय प्रवीन राई के लिए बनवाया गया था। प्रवीन राई एक प्रसिद्ध कवयित्री और संगीतकार थीं, जिन्हें “ओरछा की बुलबुल” कहा जाता है।
इसे आनंद मंडल बाग और राई प्रवीन मणिका भवन भी कहा जाता है। बाद में यह महल ओरछा किला का प्रेक्षण स्थल बना और “टोप खाना” के नाम से प्रसिद्ध हुआ।
तीन मंज़िला इस इमारत की दूसरी मंज़िल पर एक भव्य हॉल है, जिसकी दीवारों पर प्रवीन राई की विभिन्न भाव-मुद्राओं की चित्रकारी की गई है। बड़े खिड़कियों वाले कमरे रोशनी और वायु संचार के लिए आदर्श हैं। महल से जुड़े बगीचे मुग़ल शैली से प्रेरित हैं। इसका ग्रीष्मकालीन कक्ष विशेष रूप से इस तरह से बनाया गया था कि वह बाहर की अपेक्षा 10 डिग्री तक ठंडा रहता था।
किंवदंती है कि बादशाह अकबर ने उनकी सुंदरता और प्रतिभा की चर्चा सुनकर उन्हें दरबार बुलाया। वहां प्रवीन राई ने एक दोहा सुनाया, जिसमें उन्होंने इंद्रजीत सिंह के प्रति अपनी निष्ठा प्रकट की। अकबर उनकी निडरता से इतने प्रभावित हुए कि उन्हें सम्मानपूर्वक ओरछा वापस भेज दिया।
प्रवीन राई आज भी बुंदेलखंड की कला, निष्ठा और प्रेम का जीवंत प्रतीक हैं।
