In the fields of Fakharpur Shaikhpura in Baghpat lie the remains of a forgotten estate — built by a man whose name nearly disappeared with time. This is the story of Nawab Hamza Ali Khan. A surviving inscription inside a nearby mosque records: “Grave of Hazrat Nawab Hamza Ali Khan – 1833.” That one line confirms everything. It tells us that in the early 19th century, when this region was part of Meerut, Nawab Hamza Ali Khan was a powerful local zamindar whose presence shaped this land. At the heart of his estate once stood a grand mahal — now completely lost. No visible remains survive today. Nearby, however, a structure still stands. A maqbara — open from all sides, built in baradari style with multiple arches. Inside lies a simple grave, while above it, a broken dome now carries a tree growing out of it — marking years of abandonment. And yet, not everything vanished. A mosque, originally linked to the Nawab, remains active even today. Though rebuilt in 1994, it continues a living connection to the past.
