Inside the majestic Amer Fort, just 11 km from Jaipur, lies a chamber that seems to hold a thousand nights of light — the Sheesh Mahal, or Palace of Mirrors. Built under the reign of Raja Man Singh I and completed in 1727 CE — the same year Jaipur was founded — this breathtaking hall became a symbol of royal imagination and artistry.
Legends tell that the queen longed to sleep under the stars but could not do so in the open. To fulfill her wish, the king ordered the creation of this magical palace — its walls and ceilings covered in thousands of tiny mirrors and colored glass pieces, said to have been imported from Belgium. When a single candle was lit, it reflected endlessly, illuminating the entire chamber as if the heavens themselves had descended into the room.
Every reflection here whispers a story — of love, luxury, and ingenuity. The Sheesh Mahal’s dazzling interior later appeared in Indian cinema too, immortalized in the iconic song “Jab Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya” from Mughal-e-Azam. जयपुर के आमेर किले के भीतर स्थित शीश महल सदियों से रौशनी और प्रेम की एक अद्भुत कहानी सुना रहा है। महाराजा मान सिंह द्वारा निर्मित यह महल 1727 ईस्वी में पूरा हुआ — उसी वर्ष जब जयपुर राज्य की स्थापना हुई थी।
कहा जाता है कि रानी रात में लेटे-लेटे आसमान के सितारों को देखने की इच्छा रखती थीं, पर मर्यादाओं के कारण खुले आकाश तले सो नहीं सकती थीं। राजा ने उनकी यह ख्वाहिश पूरी करने के लिए शीश महल का निर्माण करवाया। दीवारों और छतों पर लगे हज़ारों बेल्जियम के शीशे और रंगीन काँच के टुकड़े, जब एक मोमबत्ती की लौ से टकराते थे, तो पूरा महल जैसे सितारों से भर उठता था।
यह वही जगह है जहाँ मुग़ल-ए-आज़म फ़िल्म के अमर गीत ‘जब प्यार किया तो डरना क्या’ की शूटिंग भी हुई थी। आज भी यह महल राजसी कल्पना, कला और विरासत की एक जीवंत निशानी है जो हर आगंतुक के मन में चमक जगाती है।
