Sukh Mahal stands quietly on the banks of Jait Sagar Lake in Bundi, Rajasthan, reflecting centuries of royal leisure and literary memory. Known also as Sukh Niwas, this “Palace of Pleasure” was built in 1776 during the reign of Rao Raja Vishnu Singh of Bundi. Historical records and ASI documentation confirm that the palace was constructed under the supervision of his Diwan, Sukhram, and served primarily as a summer retreat for the rulers of Bundi.
Designed in a harmonious blend of Rajput and Mughal architectural styles, Sukh Mahal is built largely of white stone. Its elegant chhatris, carved pillars, jharokhas and open corridors were not merely decorative but functional. Positioned along Jait Sagar Lake, the palace was designed to channel cool breezes from the water through its halls, naturally regulating the temperature during Rajasthan’s intense summers. This intelligent architectural planning makes it a fine example of climate-responsive royal design in 18th-century Rajasthan.
Sukh Mahal also holds a place in literary history. In 1886, the British writer Rudyard Kipling visited Bundi and stayed at Sukh Mahal. In his travel writings, later published in “From Sea to Sea,” Kipling described Bundi and its palaces with admiration. Scholars widely believe that the serene environment of Sukh Mahal and Bundi influenced elements of his famous novel “Kim” (1901). While “Kim” is not directly set in Bundi, the atmosphere and imagery bear resemblance to the region’s landscape and architecture.
Today, Sukh Mahal is protected and maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. It stands not only as a reminder of Bundi’s royal past but also as a bridge between Indian heritage and global literary history. Located close to Taragarh Fort, Raniji Ki Baori, and Chaurasi Khambon ki Chhatri, Sukh Mahal continues to attract visitors, especially during the annual Bundi Utsav, which celebrates the town’s vibrant cultural traditions.

राजस्थान के बूंदी नगर में जैत सागर झील के किनारे स्थित सुख महल शांति, सौंदर्य और इतिहास का अद्भुत संगम है। इसे सुख निवास भी कहा जाता है। “सुख महल” अर्थात आनंद का महल। इसका निर्माण 1776 ईस्वी में बूंदी के शासक राव राजा विष्णु सिंह के शासनकाल में उनके दीवान सुखराम की देखरेख में कराया गया था। यह महल मुख्य रूप से ग्रीष्मकालीन विश्राम स्थल के रूप में उपयोग किया जाता था।
राजपूत और मुगल स्थापत्य शैली के सुंदर मिश्रण से निर्मित यह महल सफेद पत्थर से बना है। इसके छतरियां, नक्काशीदार स्तंभ, झरोखे और खुले बरामदे न केवल सौंदर्य बढ़ाते हैं, बल्कि गर्मियों में ठंडक बनाए रखने के उद्देश्य से भी बनाए गए थे। जैत सागर झील की ठंडी हवाएं महल के गलियारों से होकर गुजरती थीं, जिससे यह गर्म मौसम में भी शीतल बना रहता था। यह 18वीं शताब्दी के राजस्थान में पर्यावरण के अनुकूल स्थापत्य योजना का उत्कृष्ट उदाहरण है।
सुख महल का संबंध प्रसिद्ध अंग्रेज लेखक रुडयार्ड किपलिंग से भी जोड़ा जाता है। 1886 में वे बूंदी आए और इसी महल में ठहरे। अपनी यात्रा-वृतांत “From Sea to Sea” में उन्होंने बूंदी और इसके महलों का उल्लेख किया। विद्वानों का मानना है कि उनके प्रसिद्ध उपन्यास “Kim” की कुछ प्रेरणा बूंदी के इसी वातावरण से जुड़ी थी, यद्यपि उपन्यास सीधे तौर पर बूंदी पर आधारित नहीं है।
आज यह महल भारतीय पुरातत्व सर्वेक्षण द्वारा संरक्षित है और बूंदी के प्रमुख पर्यटन स्थलों में से एक है। तारागढ़ किला, रानी जी की बावड़ी और चौरासी खंभों की छतरी के निकट स्थित यह महल बूंदी उत्सव के दौरान विशेष आकर्षण का केंद्र बनता है।
