The Haunting Tale Behind Chanderi’s Kati Ghati.
Commissioned in 1495 AD by Jiman Khan, son of Sher Khan, the then Governor of Chanderi, the Kati Ghati Gateway is a colossal rock-cut entrance carved into the hillside. Standing 80 feet tall and 39 feet wide, it was meant as a grand passage to welcome the Sultan of Malwa.
Legend has it that a mason, working overnight, carved the gateway from solid rock. But he overlooked the space for hinges to fix doors. When the flaw was discovered, Jiman Khan refused the promised reward. Heartbroken, the mason ended his life near the site. Locals say his spirit still lingers, turning the gateway into a haunting reminder of human ambition and tragedy.
Today, Kati Ghati remains one of Chanderi’s most iconic landmarks, connecting Bundelkhand and Malwa. Featured in The Times of India and even shown in the film Stree, it continues to draw travellers seeking both history and mystery.

पत्थरों में दर्ज एक दुखद कथा
1495 ई. में जिमन खान, शेर खान के पुत्र और तत्कालीन गवर्नर, ने कटि घाटी का निर्माण करवाया। यह द्वार पहाड़ी को काटकर बनाया गया, जिसकी ऊँचाई लगभग 80 फुट और चौड़ाई 39 फुट है। इसका उद्देश्य मालवा के सुल्तान का भव्य स्वागत करना था।
किंवदंती है कि एक राजमिस्त्री ने रातों-रात इस अद्वितीय द्वार को तराश दिया, लेकिन दरवाज़ा लगाने के लिए कब्ज़े (hinges) नहीं बनाए। इस कारण जिमन खान ने इनाम देने से मना कर दिया। अपमान और दुःख से व्यथित होकर राजमिस्त्री ने आत्महत्या कर ली। माना जाता है कि उसकी आत्मा आज भी इस द्वार पर भटकती है।
आज कटि घाटी चंदेरी का सबसे प्रमुख ऐतिहासिक स्थल है, जो बुंदेलखंड और मालवा को जोड़ता है। द टाइम्स ऑफ इंडिया में उल्लेखित और फिल्म स्त्री में दिखाया गया, यह आज भी पर्यटकों को अपने रहस्य और इतिहास से आकर्षित करता है।
