In the princely state of Rampur, where hunting was both sport and prestige, a powerful indigenous breed was carefully shaped by vision and strategy.
The Rampur Hound was created by the Nawabs of Rampur, specifically attributed to the 4th Nawab, Ahmed Ali Khan Bahadur. Their objective was clear — to produce a faster, more resilient hunter capable of enduring the harsh plains of North India.
To achieve this, they combined the explosive speed of the English Greyhound with the strength and endurance of the Afghan Tazi (Afghan Hound). The result was not merely a crossbreed, but a refined Indian sighthound — deep-chested, muscular, and built for stamina in extreme climates.
Standing approximately 26–30 inches tall with a short, smooth coat, the Rampur Hound became renowned for hunting deer, wild boar, and jackals. It was equally valued as a guard of royal estates — intelligent, alert, and fiercely loyal.
Following India’s independence and the dissolution of princely states, the breed faced a steep decline. What once symbolized royal prestige became rare. In recent years, revival efforts have renewed interest, and notably, the Border Security Force has inducted Rampur Hounds for patrol and security operations, recognizing their agility and resilience.
At a time when imported breeds are seen as prestige symbols, we must reflect. The Rampur Hound is not lesser than the Greyhound — it was refined for Indian terrain and weather. Supporting indigenous breeds is not just a pet choice; it is preservation of heritage and identity.

उत्तर प्रदेश के Rampur की नवाबी रियासतों में शिकार केवल मनोरंजन नहीं, शान का प्रतीक था।
रामपुर हाउंड का निर्माण रामपुर के नवाबों द्वारा किया गया, विशेष रूप से चौथे नवाब Ahmed Ali Khan Bahadur के काल में। उनका उद्देश्य था एक ऐसा तेज़ और सहनशील शिकारी तैयार करना जो उत्तर भारत की कठोर जलवायु में भी प्रभावी रहे।
अंग्रेज़ी ग्रेहाउंड की गति और अफ़गान ताज़ी की शक्ति व सहनशीलता को मिलाकर इस नस्ल को विकसित किया गया। परिणामस्वरूप एक गहरे सीने वाला, मजबूत, लगभग 26–30 इंच ऊँचा और छोटे चिकने कोट वाला कुत्ता तैयार हुआ — जो हिरण, जंगली सूअर और सियार के शिकार में दक्ष था।
स्वतंत्रता के बाद रियासतों के समाप्त होने से इसकी संख्या घटती गई। किंतु हाल के वर्षों में पुनर्जीवन के प्रयास हुए हैं। भारत की Border Security Force ने भी इसे अपनी गश्ती और सुरक्षा सेवाओं में शामिल किया है, जो इसकी फुर्ती और क्षमता का प्रमाण है।
