In the heart of Lucknow, the historic city of Awadh in Uttar Pradesh, stands the mysterious and unfinished tower known as Satkhanda. Commissioned around 1837 by Nawab Muhammad Ali Shah, the structure was envisioned as a seven-storey watchtower — its very name meaning “seven-storied”.
But destiny had a different plan. In 1842, after the Nawab’s passing, construction came to an abrupt halt, leaving the tower forever incomplete at just four levels. Yet even in its unfinished form, Satkhanda carries an unmistakable grandeur.
Built of red bricks, the tower reflects a rare blend of Mughal arches, French decorative sensibilities, and Greek-style proportions — a reflection of the cosmopolitan architectural vocabulary of 19th-century Lucknow. Its triple-arched windows were designed to offer a panoramic view of the old city, and some accounts suggest it may have been used for moon-sighting during festivals.
Walking through its arches and ascending the spiral staircase, one feels a sense of paused ambition — a dream frozen in time. Satkhanda stands as a reminder that even unfinished creations can become timeless heritage, holding stories that echo through centuries.

उत्त्तर प्रदेश की नवाबी शान वाले शहर लखनऊ में एक रहस्यमयी, अधूरी लेकिन मन को छू लेने वाली इमारत खड़ी है — सतखण्डा।
करीब 1837 में नवाब मुहम्मद अली शाह ने इसे सात-मंज़िला प्रहरी-मीनार के रूप में बनवाना शुरू किया था। ‘सतखण्डा’ नाम का अर्थ ही है — सात-मंज़िला इमारत।
लेकिन 1842 में नवाब के देहांत के बाद निर्माण अचानक रुक गया और यह इमारत चार मंज़िलों पर ही ठहर गई। इसके अधूरेपन में ही इसकी पहचान बस गई — अधूरी होते हुए भी पूर्ण जैसी।
लाल ईंटों से बनी यह मीनार मुगल मेहराबों, फ़्रेंच सजावटी शैली और यूनानी अनुपातों के अद्भुत मेल को दर्शाती है। कहा जाता है कि इसकी तीन-मेहराबी खिड़कियों से पुरानी लखनऊ नगरी का विहंगम दृश्य दिखाई देता था, और कुछ मान्यताओं के अनुसार यह इमारत चाँद देखने (रोज़ा-इफ्तार व त्योहारों) के लिए भी बनाई गई थी।
जब आप इसकी मेहराबों के नीचे खड़े होते हैं और ऊपर जाती सर्पिल सीढ़ियों को देखते हैं, तो लगता है जैसे समय यहीं कहीं थम गया हो — एक सपना जो अधूरा रह गया, लेकिन अपनी अधूरापन में ही एक अनोखी खूबसूरती पा गया।
