Tucked away in Agra lies one of the city’s oldest hostels — Thomason Hostel, named after James Thomason, the visionary who established the College of Civil Engineering in 1847 during the East India Company’s rule — the institution we now know as IIT Roorkee.
This red-brick structure reflects the grandeur of British colonial architecture — arched verandahs, symmetrical design, and intricate masonry. Once a hub for young minds, today it stands in a state of neglect, its history fading with every passing day.
Though the detailed history of this specific hostel remains undocumented, its connection to India’s early engineering education and colonial infrastructure makes it a silent monument to a bygone era.
Let’s not allow such legacies to vanish in dust and ruin.
थॉमसन हॉस्टल, आगरा – उपनिवेशकालीन विरासत का एक गुमनाम चैप्टर
आगरा का यह थॉमसन हॉस्टल शहर के सबसे पुराने हॉस्टलों में से एक है, जिसका नाम जेम्स थॉमसन के नाम पर रखा गया था — जिन्होंने 1847 में ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी के काल में कॉलेज ऑफ सिविल इंजीनियरिंग की स्थापना की थी, जो आज आईआईटी रुड़की के नाम से जाना जाता है।
इस भवन की भव्य ब्रिटिश स्थापत्य शैली — लाल ईंटों की दीवारें, मेहराबदार बरामदे और सुंदर शिल्पकला — आज भी इसकी ऐतिहासिकता की गवाही देती हैं। कभी छात्रों की आवाज़ों से गूंजने वाला यह हॉस्टल आज जर्जर हालत में है।
हालांकि इस हॉस्टल का पूरा इतिहास अब तक दस्तावेजों में नहीं है, पर इसकी नींव उस युग से जुड़ी है जब भारत में आधुनिक इंजीनियरिंग शिक्षा की शुरुआत हो रही थी।
ऐसी धरोहरों को यूँ ही मिटने न दें — इन्हें सहेजना हमारी ज़िम्मेदारी है।
