This temple has a remarkable backstory. Queen Ganesh Kunwari brought the child form of Ram from Ayodhya after deep penance. Lord Ram agreed to come on three conditions:
1. He would travel only during Pushya Nakshatra,
2. The first place where he is seated would become his temple,
3. And he would be the King of Orchha.
She intended to install the idol in the Chaturbhuj Temple, but since she first seated him in her palace (Rani Mahal), the child Ram remained there. That very palace became the Ram Raja Temple.
Even today, Lord Ram sits in Padmasan with a sword and shield, surrounded by Sita, Lakshman, Sugreev, Narasimha, Hanuman, Jambavan, and Durga Maa—just like a king in his court.

राम राजा मंदिर, ओरछा – जहाँ भगवान राम को राजा के रूप में पूजा जाता है
ओरछा, मध्य प्रदेश में स्थित राम राजा मंदिर वह अद्वितीय स्थान है जहाँ भगवान राम को एक शासक‑राजा के रूप में प्रतिष्ठित किया गया है, और वह भी एक राजसी महल में। यहाँ प्रतिदिन गार्ड ऑफ ऑनर दिया जाता है और देवता को शाही भोजन अर्पित किया जाता है। मंदिर में रोजाना 1,500–3,000 भक्त आते हैं, जो त्योहारों जैसे राम नवमी, शिवरात्रि और कार्तिक पूर्णिमा पर हजारों तक पहुँच जाते हैं।
16वीं सदी में राजा मधुकर शाह और रानी गणेश कुँवरि द्वारा निर्मित, इस मंदिर की कहानी—जिसमें मूर्ति वहीं स्थिर हो गई जहाँ रानी ने पहली बार बैठाई—चतुर्भुज मंदिर की बजाय इस महल को ही मंदिर बना दिया—बहुत ही प्रेरणादायक और रहस्यमयी है।
इस मंदिर की कथा भी अद्वितीय है। रानी गणेश कुँवरी ने अयोध्या से रामलला को गहन तपस्या के बाद ओरछा लाने का संकल्प लिया। भगवान राम ने तीन शर्तों पर आने की सहमति दी:
1. वे केवल पुष्य नक्षत्र में यात्रा करेंगे,
2. उन्हें जहाँ पहली बार बैठाया जाएगा, वही स्थान उनका स्थायी निवास होगा,
3. और वे ओरछा के राजा होंगे।
रानी उन्हें चतुर्भुज मंदिर में स्थापित करना चाहती थीं, लेकिन पहली बार उन्होंने उन्हें अपने महल (रानी महल) में विराजित किया, इसलिए भगवान राम वहीं स्थिर हो गए। यही महल आज राम राजा मंदिर के रूप में प्रसिद्ध है।
यहाँ भगवान राम पद्मासन में बैठे हैं, उनके हाथों में तलवार और ढाल है। उनके साथ सीता, लक्ष्मण, सुग्रीव, नृसिंह, हनुमान, जामवंत और दुर्गा माँ भी दरबार में विराजमान हैं।
