A Gateway into the Living Blue City
Chandpole, also known as the Moon Gate, stands as one of the principal historic entrances to the walled city of Jodhpur. Built as part of the city’s fortified boundaries, this gate marked the transition from the outer settlements into the dense, vibrant heart of the old city under Rathore rule.
Jodhpur was founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha, and over time, gates like Chandpole became essential to controlling movement, trade, and ceremonial processions within the city. Chandpole leads directly into the traditional market areas, eventually connecting to the Ghanta Ghar and the old commercial spine of Jodhpur.
The neighbourhood beyond the gate is known for its tightly packed houses, many painted in shades of blue, a defining visual identity of Jodhpur’s historic quarters. Chandpole Bazaar that evolved around this gate has long been associated with handicrafts, textiles, metalware, and everyday trade, making the gate not just an architectural structure but a witness to centuries of urban life.
Standing beneath Chandpole today, one experiences the layered relationship between architecture, commerce, and culture, with the imposing presence of Mehrangarh Fort always looming in the background — a reminder that this gate was once a vital link between the city and its rulers.

नीले शहर में प्रवेश का ऐतिहासिक द्वार
चंदपोल, जिसे चंद्र द्वार भी कहा जाता है, जोधपुर के पुराने परकोटे का एक प्रमुख ऐतिहासिक प्रवेश द्वार रहा है। यह द्वार बाहरी बस्तियों से पुराने शहर के घने और जीवंत हिस्सों में प्रवेश का संकेत देता था, जहाँ राठौड़ शासकों के समय व्यापार, आवागमन और शाही जुलूस नियंत्रित किए जाते थे।
1459 में राव जोधा द्वारा बसाए गए जोधपुर में चंदपोल जैसे द्वार शहर की संरचना का अहम हिस्सा थे। इसी द्वार से होकर पुराने बाज़ारों की ओर रास्ता जाता है, जो आगे चलकर घंटाघर और ऐतिहासिक व्यापारिक क्षेत्र से जुड़ता है।
चंदपोल के भीतर का इलाका अपने पास-पास बने मकानों और नीले रंग की पहचान के लिए जाना जाता है। इसी क्षेत्र में विकसित हुआ चंदपोल बाज़ार सदियों से हस्तशिल्प, वस्त्र और पारंपरिक व्यापार का केंद्र रहा है।
