Erected in 1919, it commemorates Gordon Sanderson, an archaeologist of the Archaeological Survey of India who played a key role in the conservation of the Qutub monuments. His work helped preserve this historic complex for future generations. Sanderson lost his life in 1915 during World War I at the Battle of Loos, far from the monuments he worked to protect.
The sundial’s central blade casts a moving shadow across a calibrated surface, marking time through sunlight. Inscribed upon it are the words Transit Umbra, Lux Permanet — The shadow passes, the light remains. The phrase reflects how human life may be fleeting, but knowledge and legacy endure.
