Once celebrated as a city of palaces, Chanderi was believed to house nearly 260 mahals within its walls. Time, conflict, and neglect have reduced that number to around forty-three. Hidden within the Andar Shehar stands the Raja Rani Mahal, a silent witness to this lost grandeur.
This complex is not a single palace but two—an imposing seven-storeyed Raja Mahal attached to the smaller Rani Mahal. Their contrasting architectural styles reveal different eras of construction. Inscriptions found in the bawdi inside the complex, though now illegible, show calligraphic features associated with the Khilji period, suggesting the Raja Mahal’s origins in the 15th century.
Later, in the 17th century, the Bundelas repaired and added upper sections in their distinctive style. Once crumbling, the palace today stands at the threshold of conservation, reminding Chanderi of its royal past.

राजा रानी महल, चंदेरी — महलों के खोए हुए नगर की स्मृतियाँ
कभी चंदेरी को महलों और हवेलियों का नगर कहा जाता था। मान्यता है कि यहाँ लगभग 260 महल थे, जिनमें से आज केवल लगभग 43 ही शेष हैं। अन्दर शहर में स्थित राजा रानी महल इसी विलुप्त वैभव का मौन साक्षी है।
यह परिसर वास्तव में दो अलग-अलग महलों से बना है—सात मंज़िला भव्य राजा महल और उससे जुड़ा छोटा रानी महल। दोनों की स्थापत्य शैली अलग-अलग कालखंडों की ओर संकेत करती है। परिसर की बावड़ी में मिले शिलालेख अब पढ़े नहीं जा सकते, लेकिन उनकी लिपि शैली खिलजी काल की ओर इशारा करती है, जिससे राजा महल का निर्माण 15वीं शताब्दी में माना जाता है।
17वीं शताब्दी में बुंदेलों के शासनकाल में इन संरचनाओं के ऊपरी हिस्सों का पुनर्निर्माण हुआ। आज संरक्षण की ओर बढ़ता यह महल चंदेरी के राजसी अतीत की कहानी सुनाता है।
