Hidden on a gentle slope at Ripon Place, just below the Deputy Commissioner’s office, stands one of Shimla’s most understated yet historically important religious structures — St. Michael’s Cathedral Church. Constructed between 1885 and 1886, it is recorded as Shimla’s first Roman Catholic church, serving the Catholic community of the former summer capital of British India.
The church was designed by Henry Irwin, the distinguished architect associated with several iconic colonial buildings across India. Built in grey stone and reflecting French-Gothic architectural style, its pointed arches, symmetrical façade and calm interiors represent the elegance of late Victorian ecclesiastical design.
Although Christ Church dominates the Ridge skyline, St. Michael’s Cathedral Church remains quieter — almost contemplative — preserving within its walls the layered memories of faith, administration and colonial life in the Himalayas. It stands not merely as a place of worship but as a witness to Shimla’s Roman Catholic heritage during the British era.

रिपन प्लेस में, डिप्टी कमिश्नर कार्यालय के नीचे स्थित सेंट माइकल कैथेड्रल चर्च शिमला की औपनिवेशिक विरासत का एक महत्वपूर्ण अध्याय है। इसका निर्माण 1885 से 1886 के बीच हुआ और इसे शिमला का पहला रोमन कैथोलिक चर्च माना जाता है।
