A Journey Back in Time: The Story of Darya Khan’s Tomb, Mandu. In the quiet landscape of Mandu, Madhya Pradesh, away from the more famous Jahaz Mahal and Hoshang Shah’s Tomb, stands a silent witness of power and ambition – Darya Khan’s Tomb. In the early 16th century, when Sultan Mahmud Khilji II ruled a weakening Malwa Sultanate, one of his most influential courtiers, Darya Khan, chose to secure his legacy in stone. Between 1510 and 1526 AD, he had this tomb built for himself, completing it even before his death – and after he passed away, he was laid to rest within the very monument he had commissioned. The tomb stands on a raised platform, its exterior faced with red masonry / red sandstone, once decorated with coloured enamel patterns that must have glowed under the Malwa sun. Step inside, and the plan reveals itself as a square hall, with strong arches thrown across the corners to support a large central dome, flanked by four smaller domes at the corners – a composition that instantly reminds one of the grander marble tomb of Hoshang Shah nearby. Look closely at the details: a band of miniature arches inlaid with blue tiles, and stone trellis (jali) windows that filter in slanting light and air. These are almost all that remain of what was once a richly ornamented interior, where surfaces carried both geometry and colour. Just a short walk away stands Hathi Mahal, with its massive pillars and high dome. Together, Darya Khan’s Tomb and Hathi Mahal form a compact cluster that speaks of a time when nobles could build for themselves on a scale that rivalled their rulers – a subtle yet powerful reflection of how authority had shifted in the last years of the Malwa Sultanate.
