Along the quiet canal road in Tilwara village, district Baghpat, stands a forgotten relic from the British period — the British-Era Canal Bungalow, built in 1901, its date still clearly visible on the fading façade.
What survives today is a ruin, but one that continues to pull the eyes of every traveller passing by.
This bungalow was built by the British Irrigation Department as an Inspection Bungalow, part of a long chain of rest houses constructed across Western Uttar Pradesh in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Officers supervising the canal system of the Upper Doab stayed here during their inspection tours, documenting water flow, irrigation schedules and agricultural needs.
Local elders narrate that the bungalow once had fruit orchards inside its compound. Its verandahs echoed with footsteps, evening lanterns, and the voices of travellers who halted while moving between Meerut, Baghpat and Chhaprauli.
Over time, with changing administrative priorities after Independence, the bungalow fell into disuse.
But its memories did not die.
People of Tilwara recall that Chaudhary Charan Singh Ji often halted here during his visits to Chhaprauli, giving this colonial building a new identity in local memory. While no official records survive, the strength of oral tradition keeps these stories alive.
Today the arches stand broken, the rooms lie open to sky and wind, and the lime-plastered walls are slowly being claimed by nature.
Yet the spirit of this place survives — not because of any department, but because of the children of Tilwara, who visit daily for running and exercise, keeping the surrounding area clean and breathing a little life back into this forgotten structure.
A ruin today — but a heritage site nonetheless.
If restored, it could become a window into the colonial irrigation network and a valuable cultural landmark for Baghpat.

ज़िला बागपत के तिलवाड़ा गाँव की नहर के किनारे खड़ा यह ढहता हुआ ढाँचा पहली नज़र में बस एक खंडहर लगता है —
लेकिन इसके ऊपर साफ़ दिखाई देती “1901” की लिखावट आज भी इसका असली इतिहास बताती है।
यही है ब्रिटिश कालीन नहर बंगला, जिसे अंग्रेजों के सिंचाई विभाग ने निरीक्षण भवन के रूप में बनवाया था।
उस दौर में नहरों का जाल पश्चिमी उत्तर प्रदेश की जीवन-रेखा था।
अधिकारी यहाँ ठहरते थे, नहरों की जाँच करते, पानी की गति और खेतों की ज़रूरतों को नोट करते।
स्थानीय बुज़ुर्ग बताते हैं कि कभी इसके आँगन में फलदार पेड़ थे और यह बंगला हर मौसम में बसा-बसाया रहता था।
आज़ादी के बाद, जैसे-जैसे प्रशासनिक ढाँचे बदले, यह जगह धीरे-धीरे उपयोग से बाहर हो गई।
लेकिन कहानियाँ नहीं मिटीं।
कई स्थानीय लोग याद करते हैं कि चौधरी चरण सिंह जी जब छपरौली आते थे, तो वे अक्सर इसी बंगले में ठहरते थे।
हालाँकि इसका कोई आधिकारिक रिकॉर्ड उपलब्ध नहीं, पर लोक-स्मृति आज भी इसे मजबूती से संजोए हुए है।
आज यह टूटी दीवारों, धँसी छतों और मौन गलियारों का ढेर भर रह गया है।
फिर भी, इसकी आकर्षण शक्ति वही है —
हर राहगीर इसे देखकर ठहर जाता है, जैसे कोई छुपा हुआ इतिहास उसे पुकार रहा हो।
और शायद इसकी सबसे खूबसूरत बात यह है कि तिलवाड़ा गाँव के बच्चे, जो यहाँ रोज़ दौड़ने और व्यायाम करने आते हैं,
यही बच्चे इस स्थान की सफ़ाई करते हुए इसे जीवित रखे हुए हैं।
यह खंडहर है — पर धरोहर भी।
अगर ध्यान दिया जाए, तो यह जगह बागपत की सांस्कृतिक पहचान का एक महत्त्वपूर्ण हिस्सा बन सकती है।
