The Regal Cenotaph of Maharaja Sawant Singh—Legacy by the Betwa
Among the cluster of Royal Cenotaphs on the banks of the Betwa River in Orchha, one memorial stands dedicated to Maharaja Sawant Singh — a Bundela prince of valor and vision.
He was the second son of Maharaja Rai Singh and rose to prominence as the Commander-in-Chief of the Orchha army under Maharaja Prithvi Singh in 1740. Recognizing his courage and leadership, Emperor Jahangir honored him with the prestigious title “Mahendra.”
Sawant Singh is also remembered as a patron of heritage — he is credited with having cenotaphs and chhatris erected in Orchha, leaving behind a legacy of architectural devotion. After his death in 1765 A.D., his son Het Singh built his cenotaph at Orchha — a square-plan structure crowned with domes, balconies, balustrades, and a soaring shikhar.
This cenotaph is not a tomb but a sacred memorial at his cremation site. At sunset, as golden light reflects off the Betwa and touches its domes, it becomes a serene reminder of Bundela pride and Sawant Singh’s eternal legacy.

महाराजा सावंत सिंह की छत्री—बेतवा किनारे शाही विरासत
ओरछा की बेतवा नदी के किनारे बनी बुंदेला राजाओं की शाही छतरियों में से एक है महाराजा सावंत सिंह की छत्री।
वे महाराजा राय सिंह के दूसरे पुत्र थे और 1740 में महाराजा पृथ्वीसिंह के अधीन ओरछा सेना के सेनापति बने। उनकी वीरता और नेतृत्व से प्रभावित होकर मुगल सम्राट जहाँगीर ने उन्हें “महेंद्र” की उपाधि प्रदान की।
सावंत सिंह को धरोहर निर्माण का भी श्रेय जाता है — वे ओरछा में कई छतरियों के निर्माण के लिए प्रसिद्ध हैं। उनके निधन (1765 ई.) के बाद उनके पुत्र हेत सिंह ने यह छत्री बनवाया, जिसमें वर्गाकार योजना, मध्य गरभगृह, परिक्रमा मार्ग, ऊँचा शिखर, गुंबद और जालीदार बरामदे बुंदेला स्थापत्य की भव्यता को दर्शाते हैं।
यह छत्री समाधि नहीं बल्कि वह स्मारक है जहाँ उनका अंतिम संस्कार हुआ था। सांझ के समय जब बेतवा की लहरें छत्री के प्रतिबिंब से सुनहरी हो उठती हैं, तो यह स्थल इतिहास और शौर्य की अमर गाथा सुनाता है।
