Hidden within the rising layers of the magnificent Garh Palace of Bundi, just below the watchful heights of Taragarh Fort, stands a palace that does not impress through size alone but through silence, colour, and memory — the Chhatra Mahal.
Built in the 17th century by Maharaj Rao Raja Chhatrasal of the Hada Rajput dynasty, this palace became one of the most refined residential and artistic spaces inside the Bundi Palace complex. Reached through steep stone pathways and inner courtyards, the mahal slowly reveals itself like a secret preserved by time.
Its rooftop chhatris overlook the blue town below, while inside, the walls transform into living canvases. Bundi, during the 17th and 18th centuries, emerged as one of India’s greatest centres of miniature painting, and Chhatra Mahal became one of its finest expressions. Scenes of royal processions, battles, divine legends, elephants, monsoon celebrations, and the eternal imagery of Radha and Krishna unfold across ceilings and walls.
Unlike many painted palaces lost to sunlight and moisture, several chambers here survived remarkably well because they remained deep within the palace interiors. Later rulers, especially Rao Raja Umed Singh, further patronised Bundi art and developed spaces such as the famed Chitrashala nearby, strengthening Bundi’s artistic legacy.
Historical accounts also describe the mahal as once having garden terraces, fountains, and water features that added serenity to royal life. Today, though quieter and sometimes overlooked by hurried visitors, Chhatra Mahal remains one of the most poetic corners of Bundi — a place where architecture becomes storytelling and paintings continue to whisper the glory of Hadoti’s Rajput courts.

छत्र महल, बूंदी – जहाँ दीवारें आज भी रंगों में इतिहास सुनाती हैं
बूंदी के भव्य गढ़ पैलेस परिसर के भीतर, तारागढ़ किले की ढलान के नीचे स्थित छत्र महल केवल एक राजमहल नहीं बल्कि कला और शाही जीवन का जीवित दस्तावेज है।
17वीं शताब्दी में हाड़ा राजपूत शासक महाराव राजा छत्रसाल द्वारा निर्मित यह महल बूंदी दरबार के सबसे सुंदर आवासीय और कलात्मक भागों में गिना जाता था। पत्थरों से बने ऊँचे रास्तों और आंतरिक आंगनों से होकर जब यहाँ पहुँचा जाता है, तो यह स्थान मानो समय के किसी सुरक्षित अध्याय की तरह सामने आता है।
महल की छतरियाँ पूरे शहर को निहारती हैं, जबकि भीतर प्रवेश करते ही दीवारें चित्रों की दुनिया में बदल जाती हैं। 18वीं शताब्दी तक बूंदी लघु चित्रकला का एक महत्वपूर्ण केंद्र बन चुका था और छत्र महल इसकी उत्कृष्ट मिसाल है। यहाँ देवी-देवताओं, युद्ध दृश्यों, हाथियों, राजसी जीवन और राधा-कृष्ण की मनोहारी छवियाँ दिखाई देती हैं।
महल के भीतरी कक्ष होने के कारण कई भित्ति चित्र सूर्य और नमी से सुरक्षित रहे। बाद में राजा उमेद सिंह के संरक्षण में चित्रशाला जैसे कलात्मक स्थलों का विकास हुआ जिसने बूंदी कला को नई पहचान दी।
कभी यहाँ उद्यान, फव्वारे और जल संरचनाएँ भी थीं, जो शाही जीवन को सौंदर्य और शांति प्रदान करती थीं। आज भले ही यह महल अपेक्षाकृत शांत और कम चर्चित दिखाई देता हो, लेकिन इसकी दीवारें अब भी हाड़ौती की राजपूती विरासत और कला की कहानी सुनाती हैं।
