Did you know Rani Lakshmi Bai’s memorial stands in Gwalior, not Jhansi?. One of India’s most revered freedom fighters, Rani Lakshmi Bai, continues to inspire generations with her courage. But while her name is forever linked to Jhansi, her final moments and memorial belong to Gwalior. Born as Manikarnika in 1828 in Varanasi, she grew up among the Maratha nobles in Bithoor. Brave, sharp, and determined, she became the Queen of Jhansi after marrying Raja Gangadhar Rao. In June 1858, during the fierce battle of Gwalior against the British, Rani fell in combat. She refused to surrender even in death — ensuring her body didn’t fall into enemy hands. It is believed that her remains were cremated near the battlefield, and a memorial was later built at that very site. Since then, the place is revered as the Samadhi of the Queen of Jhansi. Today, her samadhi stands at Phool Bagh in Gwalior, marked by an 8-meter-tall statue, lush greenery, and the Indian tricolour. Built in a square layout using stone, the site is a solemn tribute to her sacrifice during the 1857 revolt.
