In the southern stretch of Orchha Fort, near the Baroud Khana, stands the silent remains of Himma Hamir’s Mansion — a haveli that once echoed with nobility and service. These mansions, scattered north and south of the royal palace, were not for kings, but for the trusted guardians of the kingdom: ministers, commanders, officers, and associates who safeguarded the Bundela seat of power.
Among these loyal families was that of Champat Rai, a celebrated chieftain and commander under Orchha’s rulers. Known for his courage and service, Champat Rai became a pillar of Bundela strength. His son, Himma Hamir, carried this proud lineage forward. Belonging to the Rajput Badgujar clan, their ancestry is said to descend from Lav, the son of Shri Ram, giving their legacy a sacred and divine association.
The mansion itself is an architectural marvel of the Bundela era. With four courtyards — three inner and one outer — the haveli holds within it a grand vaulted hall supported by multifoil arches. Verandahs embrace the courtyards, while stucco ornamentation still breathes from niches, blind arches, and ceilings. The two-storied entrance gate, restored with care, rises proudly with a three-arched balcony, crowned by a palanquin-shaped Bangla roof. Lotus motifs and floral carvings guard the doorway, whispering stories of a glorious past.
Built during the reign of Maharaja Veer Singh Dev, this haveli is not just stone and lime — it is the saga of a family bound by honor, divine ancestry, and unwavering loyalty to Orchha’s throne.

ओरछा किला, अपने दक्षिणी हिस्से में बरौदखाना के पास, आज भी एक हवेली के खंडहर समेटे है — हिम्मा हमीर की हवेली। ये हवेलियाँ केवल राजाओं के लिए नहीं थीं, बल्कि उनके विश्वासपात्रों, सेनापतियों, मंत्रियों और अधिकारियों के लिए बनाई जाती थीं, जिन्होंने किले की सुरक्षा और शासन की नींव मजबूत की।
इन्हीं महान परिवारों में से एक था चंपत राय का परिवार। चंपत राय, बुंदेलों के पराक्रमी सरदार और सेनापति, अपनी निष्ठा और शौर्य के लिए प्रसिद्ध थे। उनके पुत्र हिम्मा हमीर ने इस गौरवशाली परंपरा को आगे बढ़ाया। वे राजपूत बादगुजर वंश से थे, जिसकी वंशावली परंपरा स्वयं को भगवान श्रीराम के पुत्र लव से जोड़ती है। यह दिव्य संबंध उनके परिवार की प्रतिष्ठा और गौरव को और गहरा करता है।
हवेली की रचना बुंदेला स्थापत्य का अद्भुत उदाहरण है। इसमें चार आंगन हैं — तीन आंतरिक और एक बाहरी। तिजोरीदार छतों वाला विशाल हाल, बहुमोती मेहराबों पर टिका हुआ; आंगनों के चारों ओर बरामदे; छज्जों और दीवारों पर बनी सजावटी आकृतियाँ; और अब भी शेष बचा द्विस्तरीय प्रवेश-द्वार, जिसके ऊपर तीन मेहराबों वाली बालकनी और पालकी आकार की बंगला-छत बनी है। मुख्य द्वार पर बने कमल के चित्र और नक्काशी आज भी उसकी गरिमा को दर्शाते हैं।
महाराजा वीर सिंह देव के शासनकाल में निर्मित यह हवेली केवल पत्थरों की इमारत नहीं है, बल्कि एक ऐसे परिवार की कथा है जिसकी जड़ें दिव्य वंश से जुड़ी थीं और जिन्होंने ओरछा की गद्दी की रक्षा में अपना जीवन समर्पित किया।
