In the historic town of Chanderi (Ashoknagar district, Madhya Pradesh), nestled on a high hill near the Kirti Durg Fort, stands the Jageshwari Temple, where only the face of the Goddess is visible. Unlike most temples, this is not a carved idol but a cave-sanctum — an open natural cavity surrounded later by temple structures to accommodate devotees.
Reaching the shrine is possible through two paths — one via the fort route and another through a steep stairway that leads directly to the cave. Inside, there is also a remarkable Shivling covered with 1,100 miniature lingams, and natural springs that continue to flow throughout the year, even when the town faces water scarcity.
According to local legend, the Pratihara ruler Raja Kirti Pal, once afflicted with leprosy, bathed in a nearby pond and was cured. The Goddess appeared and instructed him to build a temple and not open the sanctum for nine days. But when the king opened it on the third day, only the face of the Goddess had manifested. From then on, devotees have worshipped the mukh-swaroop (face-form) of Jageshwari Mata.
Many local traditions also associate this site with the Shakti Peeths — believing that the head of Sati fell here. These associations remain devotional beliefs, not inscription-based historical facts.

मध्य प्रदेश के अशोकनगर जिले के प्राचीन नगर चंदेरी में कीर्ति दुर्ग किले के पास स्थित जागेश्वरी मंदिर में माता का केवल मुख स्वरूप प्रतिष्ठित है। यह कोई पत्थर की मूर्ति नहीं बल्कि एक प्राकृतिक गुफा है — जिसके चारों ओर बाद में मंदिर का निर्माण हुआ ताकि श्रद्धालु दर्शन कर सकें।
मंदिर तक पहुँचने के दो रास्ते हैं — एक किले के मार्ग से और दूसरा सीढ़ियों के ज़रिए सीधे गुफा तक। मंदिर परिसर में एक अनोखा शिवलिंग है जिस पर 1100 लघु लिंगों की नक्काशी है, और पहाड़ी से प्राकृतिक झरने सालभर बहते रहते हैं, जो गर्मियों में भी सूखते नहीं।
कथा-परंपरा के अनुसार प्रतिहार वंश के शासक राजा कीर्तिपाल कुष्ठ रोग से पीड़ित थे। जंगल में स्नान करने के बाद वे स्वस्थ हुए। देवी ने उन्हें मंदिर बनवाने और नौ दिन तक पट न खोलने का निर्देश दिया। लेकिन राजा ने तीसरे दिन ही पट खोल दिए — जिससे केवल माता का मुख ही प्रकट हुआ। तभी से यहाँ मुख स्वरूप की ही पूजा होती आ रही है।
स्थानीय आस्थाओं में इस मंदिर को शक्तिपीठों में से एक माना जाता है — यह विश्वास धार्मिक परंपरा से जुड़ा है, ऐतिहासिक प्रमाणित तथ्य नहीं।
