Janak Tal, Gwalior – Once a Royal Holi Retreat, Now in Ruins. Once alive with colours, music, and regal festivity, Janak Tal in Gwalior now fights to hold on to its legacy. Nestled at the foothills of Amra Parvat, this serene lake was built by Maharaja Jiwajirao Scindia in memory of his father Janakoji Rao Scindia, nearly a century ago. In its golden days, Janak Tal was the heart of the Scindia royal family’s five-day Holi celebrations. Royals from nearby princely states would arrive in grand processions—elephants, horses, carts filled with gulal, and days of dance, music, and revelry. No one was allowed to leave until the festivities concluded. The lake was not only festive but architectural—baradaris adorned its banks, and one stood proudly in the center, accessible only by boat. The calm waters once reflected the evening shadows of the surrounding hills. Today, Janak Tal lies forgotten. Overgrown with moss, filled with silt, and encroached by anti-social elements, its charm has faded. The gardens have disappeared. Yet when the monsoon rains arrive, waterfalls still pour down the hills, offering a glimpse of its former glory. With vision and care, Janak Tal could once again sparkle as one of Gwalior’s heritage jewels. जनक ताल, ग्वालियर – कभी शाही होली का रंगीन ठिकाना, आज बदहाली का शिकार ग्वालियर के अमरा पर्वत की तलहटी में स्थित जनक ताल, जो कभी रंग-बिरंगे उत्सवों और शाही रौनक से भरा रहता था, आज अपने अस्तित्व के लिए संघर्ष कर रहा है। लगभग सौ साल पहले, इसे महाराजा जीवाजीराव सिंधिया ने अपने पिता जनकोजी राव सिंधिया की स्मृति में बनवाया था। इस ताल में हर वर्ष पांच दिवसीय शाही होली का आयोजन होता था। आसपास की रियासतों के राजा, हाथियों और घोड़ों के जुलूस, गुलाल से भरी बैलगाड़ियां, संगीत और नृत्य — यह उत्सव किसी स्वप्नलोक से कम नहीं होता था। उत्सव के दौरान किसी को भी घर लौटने की अनुमति नहीं होती थी। इस स्थल की बनावट भी बेहद भव्य थी — ताल के चारों ओर बारादरियाँ थीं, और एक बारादरी बीच में, जहां केवल नाव से पहुँचा जा सकता था। शाम होते ही पहाड़ियों की छाया ताल में झलकती थी। आज यह ताल कीचड़, काई और असामाजिक गतिविधियों का केंद्र बन चुका है। बाग-बग़ीचे उजड़ चुके हैं। लेकिन मानसून में गिरते झरने आज भी इसकी खोई हुई सुंदरता की झलक दे जाते हैं। यदि इसे उचित संरक्षण मिले, तो यह स्थल फिर से ग्वालियर की शान बन सकता है। .1
