Legends call it the Tree of Life, born from the Samudra Manthan, one of the fourteen divine treasures gifted to the heavens. Locals believe that every wish made under its shade comes true, and that the tree blesses all who circle its roots with faith and folded hands.
As I looked closely at its vast, gnarled branches, I saw what many locals claim — images of deities: Laddu Gopal, Ganesh Ji, Hanuman Ji — naturally formed in the twists of wood. To them, this is not coincidence but divinity carved by time itself.
Historically, scholars and local accounts trace the tree to around the foundation of Orchha, possibly planted during the reign of Maharaja Bir Singh Deo (c. 1600 CE), when Mughal–Bundela ties flourished. Botanically, it is an African Baobab (Adansonia digitata) — a species introduced to India through ancient trade with the African coast.
But beyond botany and dates lies its soul — the faith of those who tie mauli threads around its trunk, asking protection from evil and fulfillment of hopes. The Kalpavriksha’s hollow core, massive girth (locally believed to be 15 m wide and 40 m high), and healing reputation make it both a natural marvel and a sacred shrine.
Today, it stands fenced and partly cared for by the state; locals still protest the cement platform built around it, fearing it harms the roots. Yet, against every challenge, this living monument continues to heal itself — just as it has healed the hearts of generations who’ve knelt beneath it.

बुंदेलखंड की पवित्र धरती पर, बेतवा नदी के किनारे खड़ा है एक अद्भुत वृक्ष, जिसने सैकड़ों वर्षों के इतिहास को अपनी छाया में देखा — ओरछा का कल्पवृक्ष, जिसे स्थानीय लोग मल्लन इमली या जीवन वृक्ष के नाम से भी जानते हैं।
कहा जाता है कि यह वही कल्पवृक्ष है जो समुद्र मंथन से प्राप्त 14 रत्नों में से एक था। माना जाता है कि जो भी व्यक्ति इसकी छाया में बैठकर मनोकामना माँगता है, उसकी इच्छा पूरी होती है।
इस वृक्ष की शाखाओं में आज भी कई श्रद्धालु देवताओं की आकृतियाँ देखते हैं — लड्डू गोपाल, गणेश जी, हनुमान जी — जो मानो प्रकृति ने स्वयं अपनी छाल पर उकेरी हों।
ऐतिहासिक रूप से यह वृक्ष लगभग 500 वर्ष पुराना माना जाता है। लोककथाओं के अनुसार, इसे महाराजा वीर सिंह देव बुंदेला के समय लगाया गया था। वैज्ञानिक दृष्टि से यह अफ्रीका की प्रजाति बाओबाब (Adansonia digitata) है, जो भारत में प्राचीन व्यापार मार्गों से लाई गई मानी जाती है।
स्थानीय लोग आज भी इसके चारों ओर मौली (लाल-पीले धागे) बाँधते हैं और इसे बुरी शक्तियों से रक्षा का प्रतीक मानते हैं। इसकी ऊँचाई लगभग 40 मीटर और मोटाई लगभग 15 मीटर बताई जाती है। इसके औषधीय गुणों की भी चर्चा होती है, और यह स्थान न केवल धार्मिक बल्कि पर्यटन दृष्टि से भी अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है।
भले ही इसके चारों ओर आज पक्का फर्श बना दिया गया हो, जिससे लोग चिंतित हैं, फिर भी यह वृक्ष जीवित है — उसी आस्था और ऊर्जा के साथ, जिसने सदियों से इसे सुरक्षित रखा है।
ओरछा का कल्पवृक्ष केवल एक वृक्ष नहीं, बल्कि समय, आस्था और प्रकृति का जीवित संगम है।
