Hidden within the tranquil gardens of Delhi’s Sunder Nursery stands a monument that many visitors pass without ever knowing the mystery it holds. Lakkarwala Burj is one of those silent Mughal structures whose beauty lies not in grandeur, but in the secrets it continues to guard.
Built in the early sixteenth century, around the formative years of the Mughal Empire, this elegant domed tomb rises on a high platform with arched openings on all four sides. Time has erased the name of the individual buried here, leaving behind only a magnificent structure as a memorial to a life now lost to history.
Its interiors are extraordinary. Delicate lime-plaster patterns, honeycomb vaulting, geometric ornamentation, and Quranic inscriptions still survive, offering a glimpse into the artistic brilliance of early Mughal craftsmen. Every surface appears to whisper fragments of a forgotten story.
The name “Lakkarwala,” literally associated with wood, remains a mystery. The monument itself is built of stone and lime, and no definitive explanation survives. Like the tomb’s unknown occupant, even its name has become part of its enduring enigma.
For centuries the structure stood neglected. Then, through the remarkable efforts of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, it was painstakingly restored using traditional materials and techniques. Today, the tomb is surrounded by a beautifully revived rose garden, where history and fragrance coexist in perfect harmony.
Among the celebrated monuments of Delhi, Lakkarwala Burj remains one of the city’s most poetic hidden treasures—a place where the identity of the dead has vanished, but the soul of architecture continues to bloom.

दिल्ली के सुंदर नर्सरी के शांत वातावरण में एक ऐसा मुगलकालीन मकबरा खड़ा है, जिसे अनेक लोग देखते तो हैं, पर उसकी कहानी से अनजान रह जाते हैं। लक्कड़वाला बुर्ज उन विरासतों में से है जो अपनी भव्यता से नहीं, बल्कि अपने रहस्य से मोह लेती हैं।
सोलहवीं शताब्दी के प्रारंभिक मुगल काल में निर्मित यह सुंदर गुम्बददार मकबरा ऊँचे चबूतरे पर स्थित है। चारों दिशाओं में बने मेहराबी द्वार इसे एक विशिष्ट स्थापत्य स्वरूप प्रदान करते हैं। किंतु सबसे बड़ा रहस्य यह है कि यहाँ किस व्यक्ति को दफनाया गया था, इसका कोई निश्चित प्रमाण आज तक नहीं मिला।
इसके भीतर की सजावट अद्भुत है। महीन चुने की नक्काशी, मधुमक्खी के छत्ते जैसी मुकर्नस शैली, ज्यामितीय अलंकरण और कुरआनी आयतें प्रारंभिक मुगल कला की उत्कृष्टता को दर्शाती हैं।
“लक्कड़वाला” नाम स्वयं एक पहेली है। पत्थर और चुने से बने इस मकबरे का लकड़ी से क्या संबंध था, यह इतिहास स्पष्ट नहीं करता।
