The Khooni Darwaza of Chanderi Fort is one of the most haunting remnants of medieval India’s turbulent past. Literally meaning “Bloody Gate,” this monumental entrance stands as a silent witness to executions, mass sacrifices, and the tragic fall of Chanderi to the Mughal army under Babur in 1528.
Originally constructed as the main entrance to Chanderi Fort, this gate was once known for its grandeur and royal significance. But history took a brutal turn during Babur’s invasion. When the Rajput defenders realized that defeat was inevitable, the royal court performed Jauhar — women embraced the flames, and men died fighting. Before that, they took the tragic step of killing their own families to prevent their capture and dishonor.
Local tradition adds another dark layer: during the Sultanate of Malwa, criminals and prisoners were thrown from the high battlements of this gate, and their mutilated bodies were displayed below as a warning. It was this horrific practice that earned it the chilling name “Khooni Darwaza” — the Blood-soaked Gate.
The original fort, including this entrance, traces its roots back to King Kirti Pal in the 11th century, though it was later expanded and became a strategic stronghold. After Babur’s victory, the grandeur of the gate was left in ruins, but its legacy as a symbol of Chanderi’s last stand remains alive in collective memory.

खूनी दरवाज़ा, चंदेरी किला – लहू में डूबा हुआ एक दरवाज़ा
चंदेरी किले का खूनी दरवाज़ा मध्यकालीन भारत की एक रक्तरंजित और शौर्य से भरी कहानी का साक्षी है। इसका नाम “खूनी दरवाज़ा” दो कारणों से पड़ा — एक, सुल्तानate काल में अपराधियों को इसी दरवाज़े से किले की ऊँचाई से नीचे फेंका जाता था और उनके शव जनता को दिखाए जाते थे। दूसरा, बाबर के हमले के दौरान यहां राजपूत राजघराने ने हार मानने से पहले जौहर किया, अपने परिवारों की हत्या की और फिर स्वयं प्राण दिए ताकि कोई अपमानित न हो।
यह वही मुख्य द्वार था जो कभी अपनी शाही भव्यता के लिए प्रसिद्ध था। लेकिन 1528 में बाबर के आक्रमण के बाद चंदेरी किला ध्वस्त हुआ और इस दरवाज़े की दीवारों ने राजपूती शौर्य और बलिदान की सबसे त्रासद कथा देखी।
स्थानीय परंपरा बताती है कि मालवा सल्तनत के शासनकाल में कैदियों को इसी दरवाज़े से नीचे फेंका जाता था और यहीं उनके शवों को टांगा जाता था — तभी से इसे “खूनी दरवाज़ा” कहा जाने लगा।
इस किले का निर्माण मूल रूप से 11वीं शताब्दी में राजा कीर्ति पाल ने कराया था। बाद में यह एक रणनीतिक दुर्ग बना। आज यह दरवाज़ा इतिहास के सबसे काले लेकिन गौरवशाली अध्यायों को चुपचाप बयान करता है।
