Kusum Sarovar in Govardhan is one of those rare places where mythology and history gently merge into one timeless narrative. Long before its grand sandstone chhatris rose over the waters, this site lived in the stories of Radha, who would come here to gather kusum—flowers—for her companions. Legend says Krishna often met her here, sometimes playfully freeing her dress when it caught in thorns, turning the quiet banks into a stage for divine love.
Sages too found their spiritual journey here. Narada Muni is believed to have bathed at this spot, seeking to understand the mysteries of Raas Leela and receiving the blessing of the Gopi form. Ashtavakra Muni performed penance here, yearning for the sacred darshan of Radha-Krishna. These stories made the site a living centre of devotion far before stone ever touched water.
Historically, Kusum Sarovar began as a natural pond, known as Suman Sarovar during the era of Lord Chaitanya. Around 1675, Veer Singh of Orchha reshaped it into a structured reservoir. In the 18th century, the mighty Jat ruler Raja Suraj Mal developed the surrounding gardens. Later, his son Jawahar Singh built the magnificent sandstone cenotaphs in 1764, enshrining the memory of the Bharatpur royal family.
Today, as pilgrims walk along the Govardhan Parikrama, the reflection of these chhatris in the still waters continues to narrate a story that spans devotion, architecture, and royal legacy.

गोवर्धन का कुसुम सरोवर वह स्थान है जहाँ पौराणिक कथाएँ और इतिहास एक ही धारा में बहते दिखाई देते हैं। मान्यता है कि राधा यहाँ अपनी सखियों के लिए फूल तोड़ने आती थीं, और कृष्ण उनसे यहीं मिलते थे—कभी शरारत में काँटों में फँसी उनकी साड़ी छुड़ाते, तो कभी वृक्षों के बीच छिपकर मुस्कुराते। इस सरोवर के किनारे प्रेम, भक्ति और माधुर्य की अनगिनत कथाएँ जन्म लेती रहीं।
यह स्थल ऋषियों की तपस्थली भी रहा। कहते हैं कि नारद मुनि ने यहीं स्नान किया था ताकि रास लीला के रहस्य को समझ सकें और गोपी रूप का वरदान प्राप्त कर सकें। अष्टावक्र मुनि ने भी यहीं कठोर तप किया, राधा-कृष्ण दर्शन की अभिलाषा में। इन कथाओं ने कुसुम सरोवर को अत्यंत पवित्र स्थान बना दिया।
इतिहास बताता है कि यह एक प्राकृतिक ताल था, जिसे चैतन्य महाप्रभु के समय ‘सुमन सरोवर’ कहा जाता था। सन् 1675 के आसपास ओरछा नरेश वीर सिंह ने इसे संरचित रूप दिया। अठारहवीं सदी में भरतपुर के राजा सूरजमल ने इसके चारों ओर उद्यान विकसित कराए। बाद में उनके पुत्र जवाहर सिंह ने 1764 में भव्य लाल बलुआ-पत्थर के छत्रियाँ बनवाकर भरतपुर राजपरिवार की स्मृति को अमर कर दिया।
आज गोवर्धन परिक्रमा मार्ग पर चलते हुए जब इन छतरियों का प्रतिबिंब सरोवर में झिलमिलाता है, तो यह स्थान अपने भीतर छिपी दिव्य और ऐतिहासिक यात्रा को अब भी जीवित रखे हुए है।
